This is a difficult book to read. It details the historical and genealogical background of pioneers who died during a terrible storm in January 1888.

The tragic account, especially about the children who perished in the cold and snow, is hard to stomach, but I feel that is also an important tale and certainly part of our American history.

(307 pgs.) I can't say I "enjoyed" this book because the events of Friday, January 13, 1888 were so gruesome. The book was well-written and the notes of sources were even interesting. I learned a lot about early pioneer life in the Dakotahs, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa. I really now appreciate more keenly all the blesssings in my life. The hardships of my own seem miniscule compared with the stalwart people described in this book. I would definitely recommend this book! ...more
