Five stars are not enough for this timeless classic! I would give it one hundred stars if I could! Bless Me Ultima is one of those tales, part coming of age story, part magical, that I could read time and time again and never grow tired of it. It never fails to touch me deep in my soul.
Edited to add: I've read this book now 4 times, once a decade since first discovering. I still love it as much as I did the first time I read it and I always discover new things.

I thought the story being told of Ultima and Antonio was good. I believe that the curandera role is still important in New Mexico. The land and the people’s relationship with it is described beautifully. But the people did not come off as well. The children seemed older than 7-9 and many of people (especially Horse, Bones, and the mother) seemed to be caricatures. I could have put up with that but the overall tone gave me the feeling that I was being spoken down to and that ruined my enjoyment.
