The continuing story of Ada Smith, who we met in The War I Finally Won. In this installment, Ada has just had surgery to fix her clubfoot, and WWII rages on. Ada, Jamie and Susan go to live in Lady Thorton's cottage -- which Lady Thorton eventually moves into when her has is needed for the war effort. Soon Jewish German, Ruth, comes to the house as well, heightening tensions in the house as the war goes on outside - and inside Ada too.

A couple of the sequences in this book seemed as if they were created in order to simplify a complicated story, but overall the book was interesting and powerful. The only thing I had trouble with was Susan's repeated failure to understand that Ada was misinterpreting things that were said. After the first few times, I'd think that she would notice more quickly when Ada reacted funny.
