This book is beautifully written, but also very strange. I think it comes from the alternating viewpoint characters, as the chapters bounce back and forth.
Weirdly, I got no feeling for what the dog looked like for most of the story. If that was a deliberate choice by the author, it was an odd one, because the descriptions in the book didn't lead me to anything like how the dog looks on the cover.

Virgil is not looking forward to this summer - he feels like a failure because he never talked to Valencia Somerset in school.
