Its a lovely day in the American West. The sun is shining. It is a day of playfulness and joy ... all because a little boy and is gifted his first horse. This is Black Beauty for a boy. Right???

Wrong.

This book is written by Steinbeck after all. There will be no happily ever after. There will be tragic death, mean and tough life lessons, broken promises and promises kept with horrific costs. It will also be full of symbolism and will provoke you to think.

And it will be a beautiful reading experie

Steinbeck can really gut a person with doom and gloom. I nearly cried throughout the whole thing. Short and emotional - a glimpse into the reality of growing up on a farm in the 1930's. While harsh by today's standards, I appreciate the lessons and the responsibilities kids learned back in the day, including the constants of death and the new life, and the importance of history of one's family. ...more

Great quick read from the master Steinbeck. Always a good story to be had with him. And this one has four! I'm dying to find out what happens to Jody when he grows up and if he and Black Demon are as good buddies and he thought. ...more

This is my least favorite trip to the Salinas Valley with John Steinbeck so far. The only character really fleshed out is the affable, polite, and sometimes naughty, son Jody. I know he was ten but suffocating a bunch of lizards and dismembering a bird? C'mon! Each of the four chapters is a stand-alone story and none of them are resolved pleasantly.
