This first novel is very good noir science fiction detective mystery novel with some time travel and non human characters, from the then unknown Lethem, who has gone on to become a big novelist.

Try it if you like original science fiction coupled with a mystery and with a detective as the main character.

I got interested in this novel after reading Flavorwire's article "10 Great Science Fiction Books for People Who Don’t Read Sci-Fi" - and here on GoodReads, Shoshana gave it 5 stars; Milo & Rusty 4, so when it showed up last April in the Kindle Daily Deal, I snapped it up.


This sci-fi noir is set in the not-too-distant future, where evolved animals fill menial roles, citizens' karma levels are controlled by the government, and it's socially acceptable (darned near mandatory) to take designer amn

In a future Oakland/Bay area Private Inquisitor Conrad Metcalf tries to break open a murder case but The State already has their fall guy in mind. I tried to read this years ago and had no luck but found it a pleasant listen on audio which was read by Nick Sullivan.

I am assuming that the misogynistic angry man trope is supposed to be part of the genre but it felt like a tired stand in for character development.
