Palace Walk is the first novel in the Cairo Trilogy by the winner of 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature, from Egypt - Naguib Mahfouz. I love books that give you a real glimpse of a life unlike your own. This book is like a Jane Austen novel, for a Muslims in Cairo in the early 1900s. It's a vividly detailed exploration of the inner and outer lives of a single family as they navigate home life, marriage, children, sex, and political activism. But be prepared for the casual misogyny and sexual assault from some of the characters (not endorsed by the author, just showing the honest reality of that time and place). It was hard to
