I found this book to be an easy and fast read. And seeing that the author used to co-write for some of my favorite shows (Arrested Development, etc) I'm not surprised that I enjoyed the writing as much as I did. You obviously have to suspend your belief a bit with this book, especially the parts of them in Antartica (but since I've never been perhaps those parts are believable), but since it's a fast read, it's really not that bad. The book was written in an unconventional way, just a compilatio ...more

I was worried when I started reading this story - but quickly fell into the correspondence style and the characters. I really wasn't a fan of Elgin toward the back half of the book, but then he redeemed himself. I'm very excited to see this as a movie - especially with Cate Blanchett as Bernadette.

The audio narrator's take on Bee's voice was a little grating, but she really delivered with her singing of Oh Holy Night.

I tore through this book in less than 6 hours. Hysterical, particularly for those of us who live (or have lived) in Seattle. The witty observations and commentary about Seattle's culture, weather, population, etc had me laughing out loud! I borrowed it from the library, but will be purchasing my own copy immediately! ...more

This would be a 3 1/2. This is a very entertaining book about a woman architect, who is really an artist with an artist's moods and quirky ideas, and her family. It is very humourous, I was actually laughing through the middle part of the book, as one problem after another mounts up, but I didn't particularly like the ending, I thought it was disappointing. This is an upbeat book for those days when you want to just relax and have a good time. ...more

This was sold as funny, and it definitely was. That said, this book earned its fourth star in the poignant moments examining the breakdown of a family and the various results of miscommunication and self delusion. A great, quick read. Highly recommended.
