Trisha Harrington (trishaharrington) | 101 comments I read the book at the beginning of the year and found it a harsh but true read. I might not have been around in the 70's or the 80's but I have heard a lot about life for gay people back then. I found this book to be a real eye opener. Personally I would love to introduce this book to schools across the globe. I have never actually cried reading a book before this one. And I have cried every time I read it.

Kaje Harper | 17369 comments Sounds good, if painful. Thanks for the recommendation. I added to group bookshelves in the family/memoirs shelf. You could check and see if there are other shelves to be added (eg. bullying or high-school) http://www.goodreads.com/group/add_bo...

I know I have watched it, but the book was better in my opinion. Although the movie is good for anyone who does not like reading. :)

I agree, this one especially :)

Byron (byft) I didn't know there was a book, but it doesn't surprise me... I bawled my eyes out in the film so I can imagine how the book will effect me..

Thanks for the heads up on the book.

Kaje Harper | 17369 comments I think it's great that we're sometimes seeing books from the POV of people with someone LGBT in their family not just the main character or no one - Stick and Luna are from sibling POVs.

Trisha Harrington (trishaharrington) | 101 comments And its good to show that people can change their opinions. And even the most religious can love LGBT people in their family. :)

Absolutely. A lot of people in real life find that acceptance doesn't happen the moment they come out, but in a slow progress over time. Author Damon Suede talks about the years it took his otherwise accepting mother to get over her (non-religious) issues and fully accept him. In books it's so often a snap-shot in time, yes or no, so it's good to see something else.

Yes, the real pity is she did not realize this before he committed suicide. The father kind of surprised me though, he was a person I was unsure about. I guess I could kind of understand him. But again not... When you read this book be prepared to be confused at times by characters. The one thing I loved was seeing Mary's upbringing also. It explained certain things. :)

Kaje Harper | 17369 comments That's real life - in fiction we try to make people consistent and give them obvious motivations, but in life it's rarely that clear-cut.

Connie (Connie__Reads) | 10 comments What a coincidence, in the book I'm reading now the MC's father gives this book to his son as he is coming out and discuss the bullying and Bobby's suicide with him. I didn't know the name of the book and thought I should try and find it. Now I know which one they are talking about on this book, seems appropriate for YA audience. I will add it to my tbr

Kellyanne (greengarnet) | 49 comments Yes it definately is a ya book as far as I'm concerned.. Like I said super dad but REAL! And ya don't want to be consented to or talked down to like kids..
I love books like this an encourage many people to read it for the morals also and how much not only our actions but our words can truly affect the people around is!

message 20: by Jay (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jay Hawke (jayjordanhawke) | 35 comments I read the book and saw the movie, and both are extremely moving. They play the movie a few times a year on Lifetime, and I highly recommend catching it.
