Diem Nguyen | 2 comments Since my book is the story of the important steps forward in my life as I remember them, it fits the definition of "memoir" better than "biography". However, GoodReads has listed my book as a "biography". This makes a problem for my giveaway listing, since there is no "biography" link to click under the "Browse By Tag" heading on the giveaway page. Instead, there is a "memoir" button, which does not lead to my book. I see my book on the giveaway page when I hand-type "biography" for the tag search, but I think nearly everyone will click one of the available links instead of hand-typing a genre. So can you change my listing to "memoir" so people can click and find my giveaway? I'm believe doing so will make my giveaway far more successful. ...and thanks. :)

Genres are crowd-sourced based on how they have been shelved by users, and cannot be changed manually.

Robin Craig Clark (rudhek) | 12 comments Hi guys,
I have a book giveaway and paid campaign running simultaneously and have noticed that my book Voyager: The Art of Pure Awarenessis showing up under the genre "inspirational" and I would rather it showed up under "inspiring" or "inspiration". I have the book tagged under these preferences but it is not showing there. The problem with the genre "inspirational" is that many novels are listed there and my book is a self-help book which really belongs under the other two tag headings. Anyone there know how to tweak it?
Many thanks to you all for being so helpful.

Robin

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) As Rivka mentioned in Message 2, Genres are crowd-sourced based on how they have been shelved by users, and cannot be changed manually. So even though you've shelved it with these tags, it may be that the majority of others have not. I don't have a grasp of the nitty gritty details of how the genres exactly use the crowd sourcing, but I do know it's something we can't edit or control.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Genres and shelves are the closest goodreads has to tags (don't actually have tags or even keywords feature); certain shelf names are included in the defined genres (goodreads has no genre titled "inspiring" or " inspiration"); it takes only two members shelving a book in a genre to put the book in that genre.

The genre names/classifications shelves goodreads uses are viewable here: http://www.goodreads.com/genres/list

Robin,
I've shelved it as "memoir" so, if it takes only two members to put the book in that genre, you only need one more. Go for it!
Robin
