V.W. Singer | 253 comments My first SF/Horror novel "Vampire-Tech" is doing quite well on Amazon, so I thought I'd offer 2 ebook (EPUB only) copies (worth $5.99 each) as prizes for a little SF geek quiz to celebrate.

Vampire-Tech by Bryan Romer

(Alien technology unleashes vampires and werewolves upon the modern world).

(The pen name is different, but don't worry, it's me.)

The first two members to PM me with with correct answers to these SF related questions get the books.

1. The following are examples of a classification system from an SF series.

AUGL
CLHG
DBLF
FGLI

Question: According to this system, what is an example of a DBDG?

2. Dickon (no second name) is a NON-HUMAN character in a famous SF novel. Who is he/she/it?

3. If I was a Groaci on an Earth-like planet, what would be a necessary accessory to ensure my comfort and well being? (No, not oxygen tanks.)

I shall be the sole judge of the correctness of the answers, but I will publish my answers on this thread afterwards. No appeals will be entertained in the totally impossible event that I am wrong, or someone disagrees (and survives the kinetic energy weapon strike).

Good luck!

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Since there have been only ten views of this thread I shall assume a lack of interest and close this quiz.

But before I do, here are the answers, just in case anyone did want to know.

1. The system came from James White's classic "Sector General" space hospital series, which is highly recommended. It is used by the staff of Sector General Hospital to broadly define the environmental requirements of the many different alien patients. DBDG would define a human or alien capable of surviving in an Earth like environment.

2. Dickon is from Fritz Leiber's novel "Gather, Darkness" published in 1950. The character is of interest because it is one of the earliest descriptions of a genuine clone made from a human donor although not given the recognition it deserves. Monkey sized, it is used as a living "drone" to scout and carry messages. Interestingly, it needed to draw blood from its human in order to survive.

3. The Groaci are one of the resident opponents of Keith Laumer's hero Jame Retief of the Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne (CDT), a satirical SF adventure series published in the 1960s. The Groaci have five eyes mounted on stalks, and are very sensitive to Earth levels of sunlight. Because of this, they constantly have to wear gold tinted eye shields when out an about.

My thanks to those who did drop in to take a look.

Sadly, the only answer I knew was the Groaci being part of the Retief stories (and I'm not sure why that stuck with me. I read a novella last night in the new Analog and I've already forgotten name of alien race, and it was just last night.... but then it wasn't as good as a Retief story, either. :)

Ben Rowe (benwickens) | 431 comments yeah i was 0 for 3. But then I have like 300 books on my to read list that I already have as either paper or ebooks.

What I dont like about quizzes in this day and age is how the internet has taken the fun out of them. Two of these answers could be found within 2 minutes of googling with only the Lieber not providing a very quick answer through searching.

Have you ever seen The Man With Two Brains? "Darn, your drunk tests are hard!" (Sorry, that's just what popped into my head. Technically, it's a sci-fi movie!)

V.W. Singer | 253 comments No I hadn't seen that one, but it is funny!

Don't watch a lot of comedies because so many are um, not very funny. But I do laugh a lot when watching horror and action films. Does that count?

I suppose my quiz was too easy then :)
