Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments Tessa and I will start reading Pure on March 16th. Feel free to join us.

Synopsis:
We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.

When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

Don't worry, Kathryn, there's no problem.

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments Thanks for joining us.

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments No problem, this sounds good!!!

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments Has anyone started reading the book? I have, and I'm loving it: The concept for this post-apocalyptic world is great, and even though the dual perspective might be confusing at first, the story and goals of the main characters adds that thing to this book, which makes it more enjoyable.

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments I'm so sorry for not reading much, but I have school, and I really want to do well this year, which leaves me no time to read.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Don't worry, I'm also going to read this slowly. One reason is because I'm not that engaged in the story.

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments At first I was engaged with the story but, now, I don't know, I'm not so enthusiastic about it.

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments I'm 31 pages in or 7%. I don't know, so far I just really haven't been able to get into it. The third person view point is really different from the third person I'm used to. It's a little disorienting. I'm in the same position as you Nicholas with school and everything.

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments I'm thirty six pages in and I just can't get into it. I don't know, but now that I'm reading it, it isn't as interesting as I thought it would be. I feel like its moving really slow and it's just not quite striking my fancy. I don't think I'm going to finish this one. Sorry guys.

No problem. I'm also having second thoughts about this and I'm not even reading it, I'm listening to the audiobook, far more easier. And 28% in the story it's still not that interesting...

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments Also, I hate the constant change of perspective. The author changes the perspective when something gets really interesting, forcing me to read the perspective of someone else and forget about what had happened before to certain character.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Nicolas wrote: "Also, I hate the constant change of perspective. The author changes the perspective when something gets really interesting, forcing me to read the perspective of someone else and forget about what ..."
Yeah, it's a trick to make you read each perspective at the same pace. Sometimes it works, sometimes is just plain annoying. So far, El Capitan's story is the only one I'm interested and he just barely showed up.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments I'm sorry Nicolas, but I decided to drop this book as well.
I tried to read it and this is not a bad book it's just overly complex and not that interesting. You have to be in a certain mood to really enjoy it. Or really like complex world building and have the patience to get into a very slow story.

30% in and I still don't know what the main story is :( . Right now it looks like a survival story.

message 22: by Dr. Andy (new)

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments I agree with you 100% Tessa and you got further than I did!

Nicolas Fernandez (iamnikf) | 36 comments Yeah, I think I'll be dropping this book too. I just hate it when a book seems good but turns out to be . . . well, not interesting.

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments Ugh it's the worst, especially when you are almost done! I've had that happen a couple of times. Mostly it was novels I had to read for a class. :/

Tell me about it. It's sad that I never discovered pleasure reading until after I finished high-school. Romanian classics are just so dull and tragic *ugh*.

message 26: by Dr. Andy (new)

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments Very true. The thing that sucked about the books they assigned at my high school was that they were very dry and unrelatable. I know books like Night are revered as these amazing survivor stories and prize winners, but to a fifteen year old girl living fifty years after the holocaust, it wasn't as interesting. It also didn't help that I read it in eighth grade. I know certain stories are assigned by the state, but I feel like I would have learned more by picking my own book about a chosen topic.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Oh, I actually want to try Night, but I do think I'll judge it differently and probably enjoy it more now than I would have when I was 15 years old.

message 28: by Dr. Andy (new)

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments Yeah. It's a very powerful and moving book. You could gain a lot from it, but personally I think it's way too mature for sophomores and especially eighth graders to read. They should be reading other YA.
