NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

message 3: by NBRC Travel Agent (last edited Feb 10, 2016 02:53AM) (new)

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Papua New Guinea, or by Papua New Guinean authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Port Moresby or Papua New Guinea

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book with a purple cover"

Catherine | 5067 comments I'm ready too....

I have purple cover books (for the detour) if tou guys want to do that, or I can help with the task...to spell out either set

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Morning Jim :)

Hi Catherine :)

message 8: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments Hi Tea....how are you?
Jim...you're not far from me!!!

message 9: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments detours give us more points, but we can do only 5 of them so we should pick them good. not to mention that 4 of us would need to read detour for it to count. If all of us manage to cover it, that's extra points.

This are detours we have
- Read a book with a purple cover
- Read a book where the edition you are reading was published on the 12th of a month
- Read a book where the hardcover version is 500 or more pages
- Read a book where the title is written in different colors on the cover
- Read a book where the author's first name is one of the top 100 female names in Spain according to nameberry (http://nameberry.com/popular_names/Spain)
- Read a book where the page numbers add to 11 (i.e. 345 pages = 3+4+5 = 12)
- Read a book with the name of the tarot card "The Lovers" in the text or title
- Read a book that is in the "Best Ever Contemporary Romance Books" Listopia List (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/5...)

Jim Townsend | 174 comments Team name--Reading Roamers? Just an idea. Not final.

Jim

message 11: by Jim (last edited Feb 10, 2016 03:57AM) (new)

Jim Townsend | 174 comments I can do one of the detours--Hardcover version is 500+ pages-- with a library book I now have checked out of the library; or I can help with the task by going back to the library for a book set in Papua New Guinea.

Jim

message 12: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Actually, I'd prefer if we do spell-it-out for PNG (if we won't go with detour). I definitely don't have book by PNG author or that is set there, but I do have all the letters (for both town and country) :)

message 13: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments We only have one detour per stop, yes?

message 14: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Catherine wrote: "We only have one detour per stop, yes?"

Yes.

message 15: by Jim (last edited Feb 10, 2016 08:03PM) (new)

Jim Townsend | 174 comments The detour is read a book with a purple cover. I can also do at least one letter of the spell-it-out without hitting the library. If we choose spell-it-out, notice that PAPUA NEW GUINEA has two P's, two U's, three A's, two E's, two N's, an I, and a W. We need to read a different book (or author) for each instance of a letter occurring more than once, right? That is, we can't use the same book to cover, say, the letter A.

Jim

message 16: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I know we can use book only once, but with choices for spelling (title, author, series, character, narrator) that shouldn't be a problem.
Also Port Moresby has fewer letters so we could do that one. :)

In this stop I'm fine with everything, but setting/author from PNG. Actually I think I'm not going to be for those in most of the stops.

message 17: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Feb 10, 2016 09:34AM) (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I've added to spreadsheet tab where we can put in our finished books for later rounds. Everyone should be able to add things to spreadsheet.

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Surprisingly, there are lots of books set in PNG. I even may be willing to read this one: Before I Go to Sleep

Or spell it out. Can we use picture books for that, right? :D

I don't think I have any purple books at home at the moment, except for a cookbook :(

message 19: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments So...do we just go ahead? We still are waiting on a couple teammates to check in...but I'm ready!

message 20: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Yeah we can start :)
Every book started after team is made can count. And since there are no page rules, if you want to use picture books you can.

All we need is to decide what will we be doing.
And we need a name. So far only Jim came up with Reading Roamers. It sounds good to me :)

message 21: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments To me too, let's be RRs :)

Should we vote for what we want to do?

message 22: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments Sounds good :)

message 23: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments Ok...spell it out sounds good...or cover...I've got purple book covers

message 24: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Oh, look at this little book from a PNG author! The Sorcerer's Stone-A Tale of New Guinea magic It's not in my library though...

message 25: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 5239 comments Hey guys. I probably won't be able to do the PNG setting/author, but I do have a purple cover book, and I do have a few books that could probably help.

message 26: by sav (new)

sav I don't know if i can do a PNG setting/author but I also have a purple covered book I believe

message 27: by sav (new)

sav I also like the name Reading Roamers a lot !!!

message 30: by Anna (last edited Feb 10, 2016 02:50PM) (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments So did we decide to do a purple cover then?
When we do a detour, should we read the same "purple cover" for everyone on the team or not?

message 31: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments You mean do we need to read same book?
No, we don't. As long as it fits the task, we can read whatever we want.

I think we have 4 purple covers for sure. I'm not sure about you and Jim. Not to mention missing members :)
For now we have minimum to pass the task with detour. But we'd get more points if we go with spelling. We need 3 more purples to get bonus.

message 32: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments How come we'd get more points with spelling? It would be 10 for a task + 15 if 6 of us do it (and right now we have 6 members) = 25;
or 25 points for a detour with 4-6 members.

message 33: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments hm, you are right. I counted those 10 pts for all players too. Obviously I can't read properly :P

message 34: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments If we are going to detour, I need an advise. After carefully searching all my bookshelves, I have three options:
1. Go to the library, which I can do only on Saturday.
2. Read The Devil's Fire (Devil's Fire, #1) by Matt Tomerlin . It's been on my to-read list for a while. It's kinda purpl-ish, but I'm not sure.
3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter #6) by J.K. Rowling I know it's green, but my copy doesn't have a paper cover, and the hard cover is monotone purple, with a black spine and shiny purple letters on it.
Opinions?

message 35: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments If want to maximize the points, we are better off with spelling and saving a detour opportunity for later, when we all are more involved

We can still go with spelling :)

I would say that you should read what you want to read. We are not in a hurry and we need to be at each stop for a week at least.

To be honest do my reading by challenges. Usually I go with what I'm in the mood for and then try to fit them into my current challenges. :)

Sorry for the late entry (just saw this now) but my name is Clarissa.

And I don't think I can participate in the PNG setting/author. I'm quickly finishing up my book because I need to start another one for my book report (it's over 300 pages with tiny writing). I don't know if Stars Above by Marissa Meyer counts as a purple book-has a little purple somewhere in there. :)

Anna..I think both these work for spell it out for Port Moresby too...So you could still read either or both :)

This would work for the spell it out, though.... :)

message 40: by sav (new)

sav I think I can do a spell it out! I just need to figure out the book for it.

message 41: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (writergal123) | 41 comments Woo go team! Sorry I'm late - I didn't realize we had enough members yet!

Purple or spell it out would be best I think... have we come to a consensus?

Oh, that's great!!

message 43: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 174 comments So we do spell-it-out? Team name Reading Roamers? I admit that I consider music a passion; I sing bass in church choir; and I thought of our team's name as "Roam" by the B-52s bashed around in my head.

Jim

message 44: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments I vote for spell-it-out, fellow RRs :)
What will we spell? City or country?

message 45: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 174 comments Should I announce our team name?

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Jim wrote: "Should I announce our team name?

Do it!

message 47: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Should we divide the letters? We must be cooperative enough to do all the letters and not all the same one :)

Port Moresby - 11 letters,
Papua New Guinea - 14,
both not really dividable by 8, but I can take two. I have plans for P, for example, if no one objects.

message 48: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (writergal123) | 41 comments Our team name sounds good!

I'm about to read The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson

So I could do M if we do Port Moresby. Or maybe it'd work for another letter? What exactly are the rules for spell-it-out?

message 49: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments A letter can be the first letter of a
1) book's title ('a', 'an', and 'the' at the beginning can be skipped)
2) author's first or last name
3) character's first, last or nickname
4) translator's first or last name
5) narrator's first or last name
I think I remembered everything

message 50: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 5239 comments Wow we can use character's names too? That's awesome! And I feel we should use this detour, because the other detours seem pretty hard. This is the easiest, in my opinion. And we can use detours 5 or 6 times, am I correct? And we only have 8 stops?
