A Game of Thrones discussion

So I'm almost done with the ASOIAF series, and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for books that are similar in tone, subject, and style.

I've seen plenty of lists of books for people who like ASOIAF, but so far none of them seem to be a good match. I like the character development in ASOIF, and the strong female characters especially. I also really like how detailed the world history is.

I'm not necessarily looking for something in the same type of setting, or about war, but something that will fill the void once I finish! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

If you are looking for something similar, go to where, in my opinion, his inspiration come from. Read the accursed kings series. I hope this helps you!

You might also want to look into material from Bernard Cornwell ie. The Last Kingdom (full disclosure: its on my to read list) More historical then fantasy but George Martin himself has mention Cornwell a number of times as a source of inspiration.

I went looking for another fantasy series to get stuck into myself after finishing ASOIAF. I ended up going through Joe Anercrombie's First Law trilogy. Some incredibly well written characters amongst a dark and gritty world. Very much enjoyed.

I struggled to find something on the same caliber as ASOIAF and now I am convinced there isn't, not that there aren't any good books but it is a unique series with unique characters. I am now reading discworld series which I think is awesome. I know it's not the same thing but maybe you are like me and will enjoy something different.

Try The Dagger and the Coin by Daniel Abraham. Also, The Long Price Quartet, by the same author. The latter has much less action than the former, but I loved both series. Here's some links:
