I also posted this in Fringe Fiction, but am putting it here to reach other authors as well. This was originally posted in the Sisters in Crime Guppies discussion board, not a GR group. Posted there by Lois Winston: A few weeks ago I attended a talk given by a computer forensics expert. One of the topics he covered was book pirating sites. His advice was not to click on any links and not to send DMCA notices to any pirate sites. Most of these sites dont have our books. Theyre hosted by people in Russia, China, and the Ukraine who are more intent on dumping malware, trojans, and viruses into our computers when we click on their links. The majority of these people are not book pirates; they're identity thieves. The worst thing you can do is buy a book off one of those sites because theyll then have your credit card number. Between that and what they can access from youre computer after youve clicked some of their links, they can do all sorts of damage to your credit and bank accounts. Lois
