Spencer The book that I chose to read that won a Newberry Award was “Hoot” by Carl Hiaasen. The reason that I chose this book was because I really enjoyed it growing up as well as the movie, but I had not seen either in a very long time. The reason that I enjoyed this book so much was because of the meaning behind it. This book is about a new kid at school Roy, who meets friends Mullet Fingers and Beatrice and stand up against a construction site due to it infestation o endangered owls. This is a story about nature and saving the environment and I believe that it was the first experience that I had with such a topic growing up. What I found to be interesting about this book is the portrayal of adults. Most if not all of the adults in this story are not portrayed as good guys. The children are seen as the heroes and the adults are either negligent parents or money hungry workers for the new building being made over the owls. They could care less about anything but wealth and themselves. The message to take from this story is to stand up for what you believe in and know what is right. The only thing that I disagree with is the fact that it portrays that no adults will help and that children should take it upon themselves which I have found to be false. Overall, a great story that brought me back to my childhood.
