Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the March 2021 Classics selection. This month we will be reading Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? What are your expectations in picking this book up?

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 68 comments Dang! Now THIS is the type of book that would actually (ironically?) benefit from being in a longer, quarterly type of read, where members have more than 1 month to read this (amazing) novel. There is just SO. MUCH. in this book to ponder; I'd hate for ppl to miss anything or damper enjoyment in any way for the sake of trying to 'cram it in' by the deadline....But also, I am a huge worrywart and get stressed about things way too easily --Jen from Quebec :0)

Yes, it is a long one! But since it's our March read, it could be started now and be finished by end-March. That's two months to enjoy it!

Andy Capricorn | 95 comments I wont be joining for this one, but I have read it before. It's one of my absolute favorites, though I'm leery of re-reading it as I read The Brothers Karamazov by him last year and... it was the worst book I read all year. I'm afraid the Hate of Karamazov will color my reading. I will re-read it in a few years.

Yes this book is a long one but it's definitely readable. I think we had two weeks to read it when I was in college and I definitely finished it faster then that (because enjoyment not obligation).

Good luck and enjoy!

P.S. A tip: write down all the characters names, Most characters are referred to by three different names depending on who they are talking to.

Frances Carden Ok . . . I'm in. But I just finished War and Peace and last year finished The Brothers Karamozov. I admit a slight tremor of fear at another Russian novel so soon. lol.

Definitely going to go with the Audible for this one. It really helps me with the names.

message 6: by Rashmy (new)

Rashmy Looking forward to reading it! I kept it on hold a while a back. I'll dive right in :)

message 7: by Ananya (new)

Ananya I so want to read it, I have heard so much about this book and have high expectations but I have to wait till April, I am super busy in March. :(

Tanya Rathmann | 1 comments I'm in! This will be the first book I join the group on. I'm looking forward to it. I think I'm going to listen to the online as I read along.

Milli | 32 comments I won't be reading this in March as I read it for the second time last year! It is one of my favourite books, and a great place to start with Russian classics. Hope everyone enjoys it

message 10: by Frances (new)

Frances Carden just started and I take back my reluctance. nothing like Brothers Karamazov. I'm about 7 percent in and addicted. I can tell this is going to be a great book.

Amber (gwen809) | 3 comments This novel is so good. I remember doing a compare and contrast paper between Jean Valjean and Raskolnikov.

Betsy | 930 comments April, loved your description about the book and think it's so apt. It's my most unexpected favourite chunky novel.

Great to hear you're enjoying the audiobook, Frances.

Amber, you have to link us to your paper now, what a tease!

Frances which narrator did you go with? I'm listening to Anthony Heald and he's fantastic.
