Theresa | 15558 comments I am a total sucker for surprise wills and unexpected inheritance plots in crime fiction where secrets are revealed. I especially enjoy them when there is a touch of lightheartedness to the writing. This one delivers all that in spades.

This is YA and revolves almost entirely around a group of teenagers. Avery, a junior in high school from a disadvantaged background suddenly inherits billions from a complete stranger, Tobias Hawthorne, with one condition: she has to move to Texas and live in Hawthorne House with the now dis-inherited Hawthorne family. Hawthorne House is a full character, filled with secret passages, puzzles, hidden doors, secret rooms. Avery and the 4 Hawthorne grandsons form an uneasy alliance to solve a puzzle left by Tobias in letters to each of the grandsons. Each hopes for different reasons that the solution to the puzzle leads to answers as to who Avery is and why Tobias made her his heir.

There's a lot of suspension of disbelief needed here, but overall, I found this fun, clever, and totally enjoyable. I didn't really care if something could happen IRL or not. Lots of answers are given but also a few questions remain or were added. Since there is a sequel due to be published later this year, I expect I will get all the answers I crave.
