Since I don't follow baseball (except when my kids played Little League) there were parts of this story that went over my head such as the statistics. However, I did recognize terms and I learned quite a bit. I found the book better than I ever expected to but I was confident with the story coming from Grisham.
The story is told in the first person from the point of view of Paul Tracey only son of the pro baseball player Warren Tracey who plays for the New York Mets. Paul is now a married adult with two children of his own. He has very little contact or respect for Warren who was never close to his son, often abusing him and his mother before they divorced. So he has mixed feelings when he hears that Warren has pancreatic cancer. This starts him on of thoughtful period of remembering his childhood but especially his own love of baseball and his favorite player Joe Castle. Something happened between Warren and Joe and the story leads us through the story of Paul's life and Joe's life.
This was a terrific book about relationships, sports professionals, fans, and family interactions. The audio, in this case, gets stars too.
