Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments Have you ever starting reading a book that seemed familiar and wondered if you had perhaps read it before? Have you ever subsequently learned that it was a book you had read before only with a different title? The publishing world does tend to throw that curve ball from time to time so this month we're going to ferret out and read those books.

The challenge is to read a book that has been published under more than one title.

The inspiration for this came from a recent buddy read. The House at Riverton has alternately been published as The Shifting Fog.

Another common example is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone vs Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

To verify if a book fits this challenge, click on "all editions" on the book page to see all the titles it has been published under. One thing to note is that a title translated into another language is not the same thing as having a different title.

Here are some links to help you pick a selection.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Great challenge Janice! It's nice to see The House at Riverton buddy read being used for inspiration ;)

I'm off to gopher.

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments I've already picked out my selection. While I was writing this challenge, I was wondering if I even had a book to fit the description and was delighted to find one. The Serpent's Tale was also published under The Death Maze. I recently purchased this book, so I'm excited!

Lanelle | 4024 comments This will take some SERIOUS gophering! (which is always fun)

message 5: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11267 comments Sounds so good! I'll like to know about the different titles of the books people are reading. I agree it will need a little more gophering, but we love gophering! Don't we?

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments I agree, Sandra. We should list the books we decide to read (along with their alt title) in this thread and any others we come across to help each other out. Those lists are likely missing quite a few.

message 7: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Well, that took less time than I thought! :) I have a couple of books to choose from but the one I have decided to go for is At Break of Day which was also published as The First of July

message 8: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments My Irish themed read would be a good one for this challenge.

I read There's No Place Like Here, which was originally titled A Place Called Here.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like where you get your inspiration from Janice! I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure there must be on my TBR.

Another great book is The Winter Sea/Sophia's Secret, if you like historical fiction.

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments Lisa and Peggy are on the same wavelength!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think we both loved the book :D

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments We did! ;)

message 14: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well I have a handful listed on that listopia list. For any fantasy fans I recommend The Warded Man which back when Sarah read it was called The Painted Man

message 15: by Peggy (last edited Mar 25, 2015 08:41AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had a quick look at all books I own and have marked as want-to-read-soon, and there were several. I'll post some of them here, which weren't mentioned in the list Janice posted so maybe it's useful :)

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man/Coming Attractions
The Lavender Garden/The Light Behind the Window
Bridge of Scarlet Leaves/Every Time We Say Goodbye
Mornings in Jenin/The Scar of David

I'm surprised that there are quite a lot of books with alternative titles.

message 16: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4031 comments Interesting but a difficult challenge. Thanks for the links, Janice. Nothing piques my interest.

Found this among the links. Tess of the D'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented.

message 17: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11267 comments I found 2 that could work. The Winter Sea (it was already mentioned) is definitively my first choice. And the second one is Little Bee/The other hand (couldn't find the link. it only appears as Little Bee).

message 18: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Since I already own it I'll probably read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

It was on the list but does anyone know if it really has another title. I can't find actual evidence of this

message 20: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1791 comments There would be it's original Swedish title.

message 21: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1791 comments Which I see doesn't count, I didn't find any other English language titles either Travis.

message 22: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1791 comments If my library actually gets around to letting the public have this book (instead of leaving it in processing limbo), I'll be reading Winter Siege/The Siege Winter

message 23: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11267 comments I don't think in English has more than one title, Travis.

message 24: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I couldn't find an alternate title either..was going to read it for this challenge since I own it and had been sitting in our spare room in a box for a year now!

message 25: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Travis, you might like Midnight Riot, originally titled The Rivers of London. It's urban fantasy/mystery and the first book in a series my husband follows.

I'll look it up thanks

message 27: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2103 comments I found a few books in the Listopia list that I have in my TBR: The Golden Compass, The Warded Man and Attila. The first one I own, but I'm not sure whether it interests me enough at the moment. I'll have to see if I come up with something else.

You have to watch those listopias because readers can easily be confused (aka they haven't got a clue). That's why I suggest that you verify by clicking on "all issues" to make sure that it has indeed published under two different titles.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Mar 25, 2015 11:59AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments I'm not sure if The Ghosts of Belfast was on any of the lists. It was also published under the title The Twelve.

There was one that I found that had three titles - The Purity of Vengeance, Guilt, and Journal 64 are all the same book - the 4th book in the Department Q series.

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "Since I already own it I'll probably read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

Translations into another language don't count. This would be covered under my comment to Pragya about being cautious with those listopias.

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Love it. I will be checking my lists this evening. I can think of loads of books I've read with alternative title but not sure how many there are on my wishlist.

Thanks, Janice. Looks like it just has short and a big title. :/ Off to find another book.

message 33: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2103 comments Ha! Just realised when looking at the second link that Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? has also been published under Blade Runner! Yesss, I'll take that one, as I have it currently on loan from the library and am using it for another challenge anyway.

message 34: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's lucky Camilla!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The Aussie Readers Group have a topic on this very same subject that I was just reading on Monday. They have quite a few books listed as well.

I remember seeing Outlander listed as something else but Janice might veto that because it is Chunkster vs a Series book. (Check your list of RULES). :0)

Updated and corrected book links.
Outlander/Cross Stitch

Here is the link to the thread I mentioned above.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You had a close look at the rules Cherie :D I didn't notice.

Outlander is also published as Cross Stitch.

Yes. Thanks - I was not sure that was it and I couldn't find a link.

I recently finished the series and loved all four books (ok, there was an addiction). I was worried about the last one, since Ms Franklin died after that, but thought it was one of the best, and it did a decent job of bringing the series to a close.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Casceil wrote: "Travis, you might like Midnight Riot, originally titled The Rivers of London. It's urban fantasy/mystery and the first book in a series my husband follows."

I second Midnight Riot as a good book, and another series to add to the Yearly challange.

message 40: by Cherie (last edited Mar 25, 2015 03:22PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - question on the Series ruling. If I read a book for this challenge that is part of a series, I can count it as a book read for the series, but I cannot add it to a Level and claim 5 points, right?

I found Lord Edgware Dies/Thirteen At Dinner for the Hercule Poirot Series (#9)
Everything else I want to read is either a Chunkster or not enough pages. Too funny!

I also recommend this series.

I really miss the Mistress of the Art of Death.

message 45: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments Hmm, I'm going to check to see if any of the Ngaio Marsh books I own have alternate titles.

message 46: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments It looks like I have these from the Inspector Alleyn series, any recommendations?

#10 Death of a Peer / Surfeit Of Lampreys
#19 Death of a Fool / Off With His Head
#24 Killer Dolphin / Death At The Dolphin

message 47: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) I'm choosing The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry aka The collected works of A. J. Fikry. It didn't take me long to find a book off my to read list. In fact the first book I clicked on had an alternate title, lol.

message 48: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That is such a great book, Jennifer :-) probably one of my favorites :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments Cherie wrote: "I remember seeing Outlander listed as something else but Janice might veto that because it is Chunkster vs a Series book. (Check your list of RULES). :0)."

If you chose to read this for the challenge, it would be treated like any series book read prior to January 1st for the series challenge. You may check it off as completed for the series, but you don't get to collect 5 points for reading it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59947 comments jaxnsmom wrote: " it did a decent job of bringing the series to a close."

Oh good! I was concerned that it would be left open-ended.
