This novel’s storyline features two significant historical events: the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and the Indian Ocean Boxing Day Tsunami (2004). Marko is a Bosnian who fled to England after the presumed death of his friend during the hostilities. He later returns to Bosnia and finds out there is a question about his friend’s role in the war. Anya is a human rights researcher looking for a man involved in wartime atrocities, which takes her to Thailand, where her ex-boyfriend William is trying to rekindle their relationship. These intertwining stories explore different perspectives on war, international aid, and personal responsibility.

It is written in a non-linear manner that gradually reveals the connections among characters and events. Main themes include the lasting impact of trauma and how past events shape the present. It explores ethical dilemmas faced by aid workers and those caught in conflict zones. It examines the psychological impacts of war and natural disasters on individuals and portrays how people cope with extreme circumstances.

It is well written and relevant to today’s world. It seems a bit of a stretch to connect the Bosnian War with the Boxing Day Tsunami. Although they are both disasters, there is no real cause and effect at work. Even so, I believe the author has taken a thoughtful approach to these historical events. He does not provide a detailed background of the Bosnian War, so some advance knowledge is helpful. I would gladly read another book by this author.
