Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments Since Ann encouraged us to start discussions, I thought a I would open up the weekly check-in.

Week 18 is in the books (ha ha -- that's a little reading humor for you). How did the week go for you? What books did you finish or start reading or keep reading? Where are you in relation to your reading goal?

For a fun question, how did you hear about the PopSugar Reading Challenge? What made you decide to go for it?

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments And I forgot to post my own check-in ... I finished The Red Tent by Anita Diamant for a book with a color in the title. I absolutely loved it much to my surprise!

As of Friday, I'm at 26/50 prompts.

I found the reading challenge on Pinterest and was intrigued. I liked the idea of reading different genres or things out of my comfort zone. Plus, I read 30 books in 2014 and was looking for a bit of a nudge to increase that in 2015. I'm still leaning toward reading 50 instead of 52 (by counting each of the books in the trilogy as its own prompt) but time will tell.

Katherine (kiik) | 158 comments Thanks for starting the thread this week, Juanita!

This week, I finished The Accident, which wasn't as great as I was hoping, but still a decent, easy read with an accurate description of survivor's guilt and how we are influenced by the people around us. Anyway, I ended up filing it under an author with the same initials, which I didn't even notice until I finished reading it, so that's convenient. :) I also started Looking For Alaska before the week ended.

I was on vacation this weekend, so I just got started on The Book of Lost Things today for a book set somewhere I want to visit, although I guess that doesn't really count for this post. Nevertheless, I'm into the second chapter, and I'm already fascinated with the writing and storyline.

I also checked out Death & Co., but am unsure where to place it, so I may have to move things around.

To answer your question, I learned about the challenge from Tumblr. Pretty sure it was epicreads that reblogged it. I'd been wanting to read more and figured this would be a fun way to push myself a bit more. The group is even better, because it keeps me accountable. :)

Belinda (belindalt) | 99 comments I did not finish any books this week, but I started reading All the Light We Cannot See which I am currently using for my book with more than 500 pages prompt.

I heard about this challenge through pinterest, decided to go for it because I am trying to read more books.

message 5: by Julia (new)

Julia (_mj_howard) | 57 comments I have brought my total up to 37/52 by finishing "The Tiger's Wife" by Téa Obreht who was under the age of 30 when she wrote it.

I found out about the PopSugar Reading Challenge on Pinterest and then after a search found this group on Goodreads. And I'm loving it, I hope they do it again next year with different categories. I love that I'm reading things I usually wouldn't.

message 6: by Lüdi (new)

Lüdi I finished 3 books for the challenge this week so that's pretty exciting! I read Four: A Divergent Story Collection for a book by someone under 30. Bedtime Stories for a collection of short stories andGideon's Gift for a book set during Christmas. I believe I have a total of 30 prompts crossed off currently. :) Also, I'm currently read Bushido: The Way of the Samurai for a book originally in a different language.

I heard about this challenge on wordpress and decided to do it because I knew I would read over 50 books this year anyway so why not make it fun? It's led me to two new favorites as well so that's cool. ^_^

message 7: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 33 comments 27/52, but the book I finished reading yesterday I'm not using for any prompt--I just saw it at the library and wanted to read it; all the prompts it would fill, I already have something for. I also read Eleanor and Park, which was supposed to be for popular author's first book except that it turns out Attachments was her first, so that didn't count for anything either...good thing I'm already ahead. I'm about to start Playing for Pizza for a book set in a different country (and to get ready for my trip to Italy in 2 weeks!).

I found the challenge on tumblr. Reblogged it because it sounded interesting, wasn't really going to do it but I kept thinking about it. But I'm pretty big on doing challenges (NaNoWriMo, and a book photo challenge last November) I think my mom later found it independently, and we told my sister about it, and now we're all doing it together, which is fun.

This is on my TBR list as well. A friend just finished it and absolutely loved it.

I put Eleanor and Park in the category "a book set in high school". Maybe that will work if you haven't already used that one?

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara I am less than 6 hours away from finishing Gone with the Wind (audible). Haven't decided whether I want to use it as a classic romance or a book with a love triangle. It fits so well in both! I am also reading Emma by Jane Austen (my backup for classic romance) and Mary Poppins by PL Travers for a book with magic in it.

I've read 28 books so far. I saw the PopSugar challenge on Facebook back in January.

message 11: by WyoLady 93 (new)

WyoLady 93 (wyolady93) I started A Girl of the Limberlost A Girl of the Limberlost (Limberlost, #2) by Gene Stratton-Porter by Gene Stratton-Porter for "a book my mother loved."

I am also about 1 hour into "a Pulitzer prize winning book" Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry(1985) and only have 35 more hours to go! :)

message 12: by Ray (new)

Ray Jordan (rjordan1041) I finished Cell by Stephen King over the weekend (a book that scares you). Now I'm on Persuader by Lee Child (a book with a one word title). Plan to start Mr. Mercedes by the end of the week.
I found out about the challenge through pintrest last year. Decided to do the challenge for fun and as a way to expand my horizon. It's a way for me to pick up books I wouldn't normally read.

message 13: by Cate (new)

Cate (catelam) | 56 comments This week I've read Burial Rites for a book based on a true story and I thought it was a very good read! I've also finished my audiobook of The Art of Asking; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help by Amanda Palmer, but I don't think I can make that fit into any of my remaining prompts.

Now I have started my book published in the year I was born (1989!): The Remains of the Day, but I'm really not far into it yet.

I think I actually found out about the challenge when someone posted it on Facebook. At first I thought it sounded great but I could never make it to 52 books, but it turns out that this challenge is great motivation and I'm already at 42! :)

You can probably use "Elanore and Park" for your "book that takes place in high-school" prompt if you haven't used it yet

Planning on using "All the Light We Cannot See" for my 500 page prompt also. Just picked it up at Target last week.

message 16: by Angela (new)

Angela | 19 comments Last week i finished Four: A Divergent Story Collection for a book with a number in the title.

message 17: by Eva (new)

Eva (evasbooks) | 12 comments I only finished one book last week: The Perks of Being a Wallflower for "a book set in high school". I found the narrator pretty annoying in the beginning but I ended up really liking this book!
I have started reading On the Road which has been on my TBR forever.. But I doubt I'll be able to read much this week since I'm really busy with university.

I heard about this challenge through youtube and thought it was a great idea. I have not been reading much the past 1-2 years but now I'm loving it again!

I also read The Remains of the Day for a book that was published the year I was born. I was born in 1988 though :)

message 19: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 65 comments This week I finished The Bone Seasonby Samantha Shannon, for a book written by someone under 30. I liked it, but not as much as I'd hoped I would.
I also read Paper Towns by John Green, which I had to read for my daughter's book club. I really liked it, but not sure where to put it on the list - maybe book you own but haven't read yet.
I'm currently reading Child 44, and I'm at 25/52 books so far.
I heard about the challenge on Pinterest. I thought it sounded fun - but I would probably have given up weeks ago if not for this group, so Thanks, Everyone!

message 20: by Cate (new)

Cate (catelam) | 56 comments Eva, maybe different release dates in different countries? Wikipedia tells me it's 1989, but Wikipedia cannot always be trusted! Oh well, I've started it now so I'm going to count it for this prompt regardless ;)

message 21: by Megan (new)

Megan (megabou) | 64 comments This week I read Kaleidoscope for a book your mom loves, and I started The Hobbit for a popular author's first book.

I found about the challenge on Pinterest and I joined Goodreads in the middle of January. I was searching for a group to join and I was so happy when I found this one!

message 22: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 33 comments @ Sara & Ray: I already did 21 Proms for my high school book; nice try though!

@ Alycia: Paper Towns is becoming a movie this summer, if you don't already have one for that prompt.

message 23: by Nicole (last edited May 14, 2015 09:44PM) (new)

Nicole I just finished The Rent Collector by Camron Wright for the prompt "Set in a different country". I'm not quite sure how I feel about the story.
I have read 21 books so far. I feel like I am losing my momentum though. Each books takes me longer and longer to read. I found the PopSugar reading challenge on Pinterest. I thought this would be a good way to branch out to other genres I avoid.

Ariel, that's a great idea! I had used Serena by Ron Rash as my "book turned into a movie", but If I move that to "one word title", I'm all set. Thanks! And we'll definitely be seeing that movie this summer.
