Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments I need bookshelves. I want something interesting... What do you guys have? Anyone use something that isn't a bookshelf as a bookshelf?
I know we have a similar thread going, but it wasn't the same exactly.
Feel free to post pictures :)

Lori Walker I guess mine are pretty standard. My papa made a couple of them. Those have moveable shelves. Most of mine were found in antique stores or garage sales. They don't match, but I like that about them. I'm interested to see what people use that aren't really bookshelves...

hanna (hannaknudsen) http://tinyurl.com/29xzzf2 <--- My boyfriend and I bought four of these. You can find them at the Target store. We didn't use a backing though, they are "see-through". Basically, they are just cubbies. You can find such things are Ikea as well. We stacked two on the bottom and two on top and my boyfriend drilled them together for stability. Recently we got rid of a lot of books though and are currently only using two now. You can double line the books in each cubby for more space, too! I think they come in brown/black.

I have found a lot of interesting "bookcases" at Ikea. :)

♥Xeni♥ (xeni) I totally agree! I love Ikea, you can turn so many things into bookcases. I have standard wood ones from there with doors right now. (The doors keep "most" of the dust out). Anything to protect my lovely books!

Mary (madamefifi) | 202 comments The house my husband and I moved into a few years ago all ready had large built-in bookshelves in the den, so that's nice. Unfortunately I have many, many books! I have an armoire-style TV cabinet with lovely enclosed bookshelf units on either side of it and DH bought 2 tall bookshelves from Crate&Barrel to go on either side of our big TV downstairs. I'm also a big fan of tables with a shelf underneath, and bought my
coffee table and 2 end tables from C&B specifically because they have that feature and also because they are painted red.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I've posted this some place before, I think. Back in the 60's (and probably before and after), people used cement blocks and 1 x 8 boards (or even up to 2 x 10). One of my friends even had a party where each of us painted one of the fancy cement blocks that would become her bookshelves.

Mary (madamefifi) | 202 comments Those plastic crates were also popular--the kind poor college students could steal from behind grocery stores in the middle of the night.

Susan LOL Mary!! I had a few of those and that's just how I got them! Hahahaha

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 4853 comments In my parental home, I have these huge floor to ceiling wooden shelves painted white, made-to-order by my father.
Now I have crammed my books in the built in shelves in all our spare rooms.

♥Xeni♥ (xeni) Gosh, Mary those are really gorgeous! That's exactly how I pictured my future house/apartment/other living place with room to look like! I love furniture that looks kind of old-fashioned but still pretty!
