Jack Johnson and the like: torture or groovy?

I like one Jack Johnson song, "Flake." His Curious George soundtrack is really popular here in my library system.
I also love Segovia, but I know that's not the kind of man with guitar you mean.
Actually I don't mind some Jack Johnson, and then he has some that are like fingernails on a chalk board. I feel the same way about Ben Harper. Jack Johnson and Ben Harper combined to do a Bob Marley song that I like called High Tide or Low Tide. I like acoustic Clapton.

I might call it Jimmy Buffett syndrome.
The ones I don't like tend to be laid-back, possibly shoeless, sunshine Hawaiin shirt groovy, and border on easy-listening to my ears. They sing about love or pot or drinks on the beach. The first Jack Johnson I heard was a song that I believe is called "Bubble Toes", and encompassed all of those things.
Ben Harper skirts the line, because I think he's a talented guitarist and has written some decent songs.
But if my local radio station plays some guy earnestly strumming a love song, I'm going to change the channel.
I think part of my issue is that they border a weird line acoustic-singer-songwriter-folk that somehow scoffs at real folk music as an archaic form, when it is actually similar but played by better musicians and informed by more complex subject matter. Nick Drake falls in the latter category; his music elevates the form.

edit: Except for Ben Harper, who's been around long enough to transcend this genre, I think, and he's different, too. I don't care one way or the other about him.

I think it's "music by which fraternity boys can attempt to impress sorority girls with their sensitive natures."

as for ben harper, i think he is lenny kravitz cool. both sides of the gun is my fav album. 2 disc set with one being soft and willowy and the other being funky and cool.

Ooh. I can live with that.

Oh, you are so right, Sarah Pi. :)
I don't find Pink Moon depressing, RA. Sure, a few songs are sad, but mostly, it's just incredibly beautiful music.
Janine, yes, Jack Johnson is the banana pancake guy.

John Butler Trio is co-headlining with State Radio at Wolftrap this summer and I'm pretty excited about it.

I don't really know John Butler Trio, so I won't comment on their music. G. Love does fall in that category for me.

And also mmmm, I like most of the guys who've been mentioned - well, some Jack Johnson... it all starts sounding the same. Sometimes I just want mellooooowwww.
I love Keb Mo and Taj Mahal.

I gotta side with RA. People strumming guitars they can't afford and don't deserve whilst intoning songs all about Themselves and how They feel about events affecting Them in Their lives, all in the trepidant tenor of God pondering whom He might next consign to eternal damnation.
Not my idea of a party.

Why does music always have to be a party with some people? Why can't it just be relaxing? I love Jack Johnson's music on a spring, summer, or early fall road trip for just that reason - it's relaxing and optimistic.

Let me rephrase: Not my idea of fun, entertainment, or escapism.
But then it would be a pretty boring world if everyone liked the same thing, right Heidi?

JESSS!!! :) I get what you're saying, Clark. I was just picking on you.

:'(
It is National grape popsicle day.
Yes it is, but I prefer root beer popsicles, grape are good too though.

Heidi, save it for next week. I'm nursing a scratched retina. I'd be an easy mark.

You lucked out then, Clark. I'll be on vacation all next week. :)
Ah, stop bragging...
Good for you though, Heidi. I'm jealous.

Ozomatli and Rusted Root don't fall in the category because a)They are full bands and b)they have other subject matter. They operate in some middleground, just outside of jam.
Gomez also doesn't fall into the category.
Keb Mo and Taj Mahal do not fall into the category. They play blues, and they are not frat boys.
The Beach Boys do not fall into the category despite their Hawaiian shirts.

Popsicles would be good to have at a beach party. :)
Well, maybe I wasn't, because I can't really stand him either. I don't like it when people refer to him as "jack" or DMB Dave as "Dave." ack, ack, ack.
My exception to the touchy-feeley man with guitar sound is Ben Harper. I like his sound.
What other man-with-guitar sounds do you like, dislike?
