I know how most of us feel about DMB (ack, ack) but I was suprised to see Gretchen and Sarah Pi discuss Jack Johnson.
Well, maybe I wasn't, because I can't really stand him either. I don't like it when people refer to him as "jack" or DMB Dave as "Dave." ack, ack, ack.
My exception to the touchy-feeley man with guitar sound is Ben Harper. I like his sound.

What other man-with-guitar sounds do you like, dislike?

smetchie | 4034 comments Woah, Sally! You're reading my mind! I was just thinking, wow, people really hate Jack Johnson. Like, a whole lot! I had no idea. I don't know anyone in my real life who hates him. Dave Matthews, yes. But that's usually people who saw him when he was small and liked him back then and got irritated when he got famous. So I don't really get the hate. Apparently I'm ok with the touchy-feeley man with guitar sound. It's not my all time fave, but I like it.

smetchie | 4034 comments p.s. I think Ben Harper is my husband's "freebie."

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Does Nick Drake count? I love Pink Moon, the whole album.
I like one Jack Johnson song, "Flake." His Curious George soundtrack is really popular here in my library system.

I also love Segovia, but I know that's not the kind of man with guitar you mean.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually I don't mind some Jack Johnson, and then he has some that are like fingernails on a chalk board. I feel the same way about Ben Harper. Jack Johnson and Ben Harper combined to do a Bob Marley song that I like called High Tide or Low Tide. I like acoustic Clapton.

message 6: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Jim I love that High Tide Low Tide cover.

Sarah | 13814 comments The guy-with-guitar thing that I don't like is very specific, and it certainly doesn't apply to all guys-with-guitars.

I might call it Jimmy Buffett syndrome.
The ones I don't like tend to be laid-back, possibly shoeless, sunshine Hawaiin shirt groovy, and border on easy-listening to my ears. They sing about love or pot or drinks on the beach. The first Jack Johnson I heard was a song that I believe is called "Bubble Toes", and encompassed all of those things.
Ben Harper skirts the line, because I think he's a talented guitarist and has written some decent songs.
But if my local radio station plays some guy earnestly strumming a love song, I'm going to change the channel.

I think part of my issue is that they border a weird line acoustic-singer-songwriter-folk that somehow scoffs at real folk music as an archaic form, when it is actually similar but played by better musicians and informed by more complex subject matter. Nick Drake falls in the latter category; his music elevates the form.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Holy f--k, I hate all those guys. As I think I said in another group, all you need to do is put a lame white guy reggae riff on an acoustic guitar and show a couple beach scenes and you've got a video. Hate them hate them hate them. Music by which sorority girls can feel edgy.

edit: Except for Ben Harper, who's been around long enough to transcend this genre, I think, and he's different, too. I don't care one way or the other about him.

oooh, Clapton is allright imho.

message 10: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Pink Moon is also a remarkably depressing album for the librarian.

smetchie | 4034 comments "Music by which sorority girls can feel edgy."

ohhhhh. I see.

janine | 7709 comments who is jack johnson again? is he the banana pancakes guy?

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I respectfully disagree with "music by which sorority girls can feel edgy." I think that's actually hip hop.
I think it's "music by which fraternity boys can attempt to impress sorority girls with their sensitive natures."

message 14: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i like jack johnson. what is wrong with just chillin' once in a while, and songs don't always have to have deep meanings. i find jack johnson easy to listen to when i am not really listening at all. and who doesn't want banana pancakes after hearing a song about them?

as for ben harper, i think he is lenny kravitz cool. both sides of the gun is my fav album. 2 disc set with one being soft and willowy and the other being funky and cool.

Ooh. I can live with that.

Oh, you are so right, Sarah Pi. :)

I don't find Pink Moon depressing, RA. Sure, a few songs are sad, but mostly, it's just incredibly beautiful music.

Janine, yes, Jack Johnson is the banana pancake guy.

message 17: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ben Harper's got some street cred. He's played with some cool people too. An older friend of mine was a volunteer at Bonaroo a few years ago and was hanging out with a fellow older guy backstage, and gradually realized it was John Paul Jones, there to back up Ben Harper.

message 18: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Does G. Love fall into this category? He plays with Jack Johnson and Ben Harper a lot. Donovan Frankenreiter (sp?) John Butler Trio? I'm not sure I even understand the genre.

John Butler Trio is co-headlining with State Radio at Wolftrap this summer and I'm pretty excited about it.

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments To me it's a subset of jam bands, for those who can't be bothered to start a band.
I don't really know John Butler Trio, so I won't comment on their music. G. Love does fall in that category for me.

message 20: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I like G. Love and Ozomatli... and I was wondering the same thing - do they fit that genre? And what about The Beach Boys? Cuz I love them, too. :) They make me happy.

And also mmmm, I like most of the guys who've been mentioned - well, some Jack Johnson... it all starts sounding the same. Sometimes I just want mellooooowwww.

I love Keb Mo and Taj Mahal.

message 21: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Ozomatli!!

message 22: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments keb mo!!!!! one of my favs. i had my son sing his song "i'm amazing" at a school convocation that i spoke at this spring. i also like the song "you don't have to shave yo legs"

I gotta side with RA. People strumming guitars they can't afford and don't deserve whilst intoning songs all about Themselves and how They feel about events affecting Them in Their lives, all in the trepidant tenor of God pondering whom He might next consign to eternal damnation.

Not my idea of a party.

Why does music always have to be a party with some people? Why can't it just be relaxing? I love Jack Johnson's music on a spring, summer, or early fall road trip for just that reason - it's relaxing and optimistic.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I'm old school. Just give me James Taylor's white album "Steam Roller," etc. and I'm butter.

message 34: by Heidi (new)

Let me rephrase: Not my idea of fun, entertainment, or escapism.

But then it would be a pretty boring world if everyone liked the same thing, right Heidi?

Heidi, save it for next week. I'm nursing a scratched retina. I'd be an easy mark.

Good for you though, Heidi. I'm jealous.

smetchie | 4034 comments Me too, Heidi!!! You going anywhere good?

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments In response to an earlier question:
Ozomatli and Rusted Root don't fall in the category because a)They are full bands and b)they have other subject matter. They operate in some middleground, just outside of jam.
Gomez also doesn't fall into the category.
Keb Mo and Taj Mahal do not fall into the category. They play blues, and they are not frat boys.
The Beach Boys do not fall into the category despite their Hawaiian shirts.

LOL, 65.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I like orange popsicles, but now I want to try a root beer one.

Popsicles would be good to have at a beach party. :)
