25.2 - Jayme VA's task: Around the Country in 6 Parks

This year, I have had the pleasure of visiting several of the US National Parks all around the country and will be going to a couple more this summer.

Join me on my trip, choose two of the following options and read one book for each option you choose.

Option 1: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone is our first national park. Choose an author who has published more than 5 books (separate works) and read his or her first published book. Anthologies by a single author (short stories or novella collections) are fine, but anthologies that include multiple authors are excluded for the purpose of this task.
If there is any question about what constitutes the first published book, please ask in the help thread

Option 2: Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

We rafted down the Snake river when we visited Jackson Hole in Grand Teton National Park. Read a book with one of the following words in the title or author’s name: Raft, Snake, River, Jackson, Hole, or Grand. Plurals and possessives will work, no other variations or compound words.

Option 3: Olympic National Park, Washington

Who knew?!... Olympic National Park in Washington is home to a temperate rain forest. Read a book set in a country with large areas of rain forests from this list: Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Peru, Indonesia, Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Venezuela, Bolivia, Mexico, Suriname
Required: Please identify the country if it is not clearly identified in the Goodreads description

Option 4: Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Due to the rugged topography of the Canyonlands area, much of it was accessible only by foot or horse until the uranium boom of the 1950's. With the growth of the country's nuclear arms program, the Atomic Energy Commission offered monetary incentives for the discovery and delivery of uranium ore. Certain rock layers in Canyonlands contain uranium, and prospectors built many exploratory roads on public lands in search of "radioactive gold." (source: Canyonlands)
Read a book with an element in the title List of Elements or a book from this list: Best Geology Books
If you choose to use the name of an element, plurals and possessives are okay, but no other variations.

Option 5: Shenandoah National Park

We can’t forget the East Coast! One hundred and one miles of the Appalachian Trail are in this park. Hike part of the trail by reading a book set in one of the states through which the trail passes: Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Required: Please identify the state if it is not clearly identified in the Goodreads description

Option 6: Road Trip! Colorado and Utah

Last fall, we rented an RV and visited as many parks as we could in Colorado and Utah. From the tundra in the Rocky Mountains to the desert in Moab to the top of Pike’s Peak in a blizzard, we enjoyed everything we saw. Read a book that features a road trip from one of these two lists:
Best Road Trip Books
Popular Road Trip Books
Required: Please identify which list you used and if you choose the Popular Road Trip list include the page number when you post

Required: Please state the options when you post
Optional: Where should I go next? Tell us your favorite national park!

Randi (mrsrandimoulton) | 254 comments I wanted to verify that The Grimm Legacy works for option 5 (setting is New York) - it's listed as the setting on its GR page, but not listed in the description; however, on the author's website it is listed as taking place in NYC. http://www.pollyshulman.com/grimm.html (upper left)

For option two, Lisa Jackson has quite a few books - mystery/thriller.

message 7: by Bea (new)

Bea For option 3 would The Mapmaker's Wife: A True Tale Of Love, Murder, And Survival In The Amazon work?

"The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests, and it comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world." Wikkipedia.

Katrina (katmcv) | 455 comments Would Ironside work for the elements option (Iron)? Or would the word have to be on its own?

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments Dee wrote: "would you accept futuristic bolivia for option 3? - Turing's Delirium"

Yes, that works.

Both these work.

I'm going to ask the moderators to update it to no compound words, so this won't work. Thanks for checking.

It mentions Peru in the description, so this is fine and looks interesting!

For option 4, if you like mysteries, there's a series by Camille Minichino that have the names of elements in the titles of the books.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) Hi Jayme VA, would you accept Leadville for Option 4 (lead)?

message 16: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments thanks for that mystery series Sandy - my library has the first one ;)

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments Shannon wrote: "Hi Jayme VA, would you accept Leadville for Option 4 (lead)?"

Hi Shannon, the task is going to be updated to say no compound words, so Leadville does not work. Thanks for checking.

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments If you enjoy historical mysteries the first five of Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco series is set in ancient Rome and have the names of elements in the titles. The first is The Silver Pigs.
I've enjoyed her books enormously

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments How should anthologies be handled in regards to Option 1?

For example - Anne Bishop contributed to two anthologies before releasing Daughter of the Blood, can I still use Daughter of the Blood for her "first book?"

Sure, multiple states are fine.

Hi Vicky,

Sorry it took me a bit to respond to this one- which anthology are you referring to? From wikipedia, it looks like she contributed to two anthologies after her first book came out, so I just want to confirm titles with you. Thanks!

Lulu (robotwitch) Would these two count?

The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño for Option 3: Olympic National Park, Washington, since I believe a large part of it is set in Mexico.
Anthropology of an American Girl by Hilary Thayer Hamann for Option 5: Shenandoah National Park.

I'm pretty sure the latter is okay, it's mostly the first one I want to check!

Hi Lulu,

Thanks to some research by the moderators, The Savage Detectives is fine. And yes, American Girl also works. Thanks!

Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments Stesse wrote: "For Option 2, would a series title work if it has Jackson in it? I was thinking of The Last Olympian which is a part of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Thanks!"

Hi Stesse,

According to the overall rules of the challenge:

For tasks that require a word in a title, only the title and the subtitle may be used. Series subtitles will NOT apply ex. "a novel of Series name", "A Series name book", "Book # of Series name", etc..

Sorry!
