There are a lot of great memorable moments that offered me a lot of wisdom in this book. This is one of the reasons I love it so much! There is one in particular, for me.
When Okwonko's uncle asks him about the motherland. He says, "A man belongs to his fatherland and not to his motherland. And yet we say Nneka - "Mother is Supreme." Why is that?" Okwonko doesn't know the answer. His uncle first answers the first question and then asks him another. He says, "A man belongs to his fatherland when things are good and life is sweet. But when there is sorrow and bitterness he finds refuge in his motherland. Your mother is there to protect you." His next question to Okwonko is, "You think you are the great sufferer in the world?" And his uncle answers this one too. "For whom is it well, for whom is it well? There is no one for whom it is well."
Greatest wisdom! "Mother is Supreme." and We all have troubles, all of us, there is no one that is excluded from it. Such profound themes, and the way the Achebe wrote about it is beautiful!
