I started working on a guy and his dog at the end of the world novel, a la "I am Legend", and that morphed into something else entirely. That happens sometimes, where the flow of the story takes you somewhere else. I will finish it in less than a month though, and I'm glad because another story is pulling at me already.

Write. But write about what you love, not what you think will get you money. That way, you win no matter what.

In some ways, it's like exercise. You need to set goals, so during those times when you just don't feel like doing anything, you still put pen to paper and work. I try to set into words a specific amount of characters each day, averaged out over the week. So, some days I write less, sometime I write more. I usually write about things that I love, so that makes it easy to get inspired though. There is only so much you can do in this short life of ours, so why not stick to writing about the things you love?
