Mike Rodelli The simple answer is that sometimes a case resonates with me, so I develop a strong interest in it. That is especially true if I find the behavioral profiling aspect of it to be intriguing. I worked with Richard Walter, one of the pioneers of criminal profiling, for 14 years. While I am not a "profiler" per se, some of what he does inevitably rubbed off on me.
Mike Rodelli I am currently working on two books, one a true-crime story from Europe and the other an obscure but interesting true-crime story from New York State.
Mike Rodelli In general, find a subject that you love to write about and do it as an extension of you natural interests, not as a job.
Mike Rodelli I love doing library and Internet research, so a story represents an opportunity for me to delve into the minutiae of the story. Mike Rodelli Luckily, since I write true-crime, I don't get writer's block. I assume that is more prevalent in fiction writers.
Mike Rodelli I don't make up a reading list per se. I just look to see what true-crime and non-fiction books come out that interest me and I tend to gravitate towards them.
