When I'm blocked its usually because I'm trying too hard to make something happened that isn't there yet. My father near the end of his life presented me with a diary that he had kept during his war years. He never spoke of his experiences, (he rarely spoke of anything), the diary was filled with the horror of war, and the toll it must have taken on an 18 year old boy.
I started to think about my own children who did not know me when I was young and if it would help them understand who I was so I wrote down small short stories for them to read one day. While I was doing this Emmett Casey, the main character in my novel started to take shape in my head. I had never written before but I began to and when the kids read it they said I had to finish it, and the rest is now Bless Me Father.
