Paris in the 1950s!
It's fictional only because it's in the past, but the real authors and artists who made this era a creative renaissance were fascinating. I'd sip absinthe at Cafe de Flore on the left bank with Hemingway and talk with James Baldwin, Alice B. Toklas and Simone de Beauvoir about writing.

Ah, so many! I won't be out of my writing cave for a few more weeks, but when I emerge, I'm tackling this list: Anne Tyler's Redhead by the Side of the Road, Jennifer Weiner's Big Summer, Emma Straub's All Adults Here, and because I've got pandemic on the brain, I'll be digging into Lawrence Wright's The End of October.

When I'm blocked, I start writing a journal entry. I try not to self-edit as I go and I let everything flow onto the page. When I'm writing about personal stuff and figuring out how I feel through writing, I usually get the flow back. I find that writing--about anything--jump starts my writing muscle and gets me closer to being able to write what I need. I also cut myself some slack in those moments. Sometimes, I'm just blocked, and even the five pages I've forced myself to write are awful and need to be thrown out. That's okay. As long as I'm putting words on the page, I know I'll get unblocked eventually, and I'll be ready at my keyboard to take advantage immediately.

I'm getting ready to launch my first romance novel--French Kiss--editing my second one and writing my third. The one I'm currently writing is the sequel to the upcoming The Summer of Him, which will debut in May. More info to come on all three... and on what's in the pipeline after that.

I sort through my ideas when I'm out for a long run or on a long drive. I sometimes need to get away from my computer and let ideas wash over me. Then I'm fresh and ready when I come back to the computer. I get inspired constantly by profiles of people I read about in the news and by people I observe in coffeehouses -- the loud, uninhibited ones make for the best character studies!
