Like most African Americans, I always knew I was the descendant of people who were enslaved. What I didn't know until college was that my father's family was not enslaved by white people... their owners were Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians. I couldn't believe it at first. I wanted to tell my ancestors' story to raise awareness of this history, which demonstrates that slavery and racism were ills that also affected Native American nations.
