My grandad and his siblings wrote a book about their experience of growing up on a farm in Waikato, New Zealand, and eventually each leaving and finding their own path in life. While in a writing class, I was given an assignment to write about unresolved conflict between two characters. What emerged was a scene depicting fictionalized versions of my great-grandparents, being faced with the reality of having to sell their farm at the end of their lives.

I've found it helpful to share some of my work with others and have them read and give me feedback. Also, use a 'Notes' app or carry and pad and pen around so you can jot down any ideas that come to you at random moments.

I was mesmerized by Louis Sachar's 'Holes' in elementary school - the way he threaded together a multi-generational story between teenagers Stanley and Zero. I think I'd want to go to God's Thumb and try the "sploosh."
