Oh boy, that's a tough one. Given that I am an aspiring writer myself I'm not certain my answer holds any credibility. However, I think the advice for writers is the same for any career path someone choose. Do the thing you like to do because it brings you joy and adds value to your life. If you do that as a writer I suppose your audience will notice.

I was sitting in a question and answer session by a friend who is a writer and thought, hey, I'd like to try that. The idea came to me on the car ride home.

I would say my issue is not so much writer's block, but rather writer's motivation. On any given day I have about 8 million ideas swirling through my head. Much to the dismay of my loved ones, I have difficulty turning my brain off.
This also tends to prevent me from writing because seeing those ideas fully fleshed out is, frankly, hard work. However, I feel like the advice is the same for me as it is for someone with writer's block. In either of these cases, you have to treat writing like a jazz pianist treats the piano. It's very obvious they have no idea what they are going to play when they get up there. They just sit down and start improvising. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't, but either way they sat down and played.
