Mikki Brammer Thanks so much for reading, Mike! I do love stories with intriguing female characters, like 'Convenience Store Woman' by Sayaka Murata and 'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' by Gail Honeyman. Another wonderful book, which is a beautiful, poignant examination of grief, love and what it feels like to be on the outside looking in, is ‘A Single Man’ by Christopher Isherwood. In terms of writing, I’ve always loved the prose of Martha Gellhorn (whose book Clover reads in the hospital!). Though she didn’t write fiction, her writing is so evocative and vivid, yet admirably economical. And most recently, I really enjoyed Shark Heart by Emily Habeck, which is a touching rendering of grief and the many ways it shapes us.

(Stay tuned for the paperback of Clover, as that will also contain several more of my book recommendations as well as a bonus chapter and Q&A!)
Mikki Brammer Hi Kathy! I actually never imagined I’d write a novel before I had the idea for this one. It began while I was trying to understand my own anxieties around the topic of death, which I’d had since I was a kid. Instead avoiding everything about it—books, articles, podcasts—I’d decided to get curious about it. And that’s when I learned about the concept of a death doula, which struck me as such a noble thing to do, and I wondered what would inspire someone to choose that professional path. Then I thought, ‘what if I could write a book about death for people like me who usually avoid anything death-related, and make it fun, uplifting and optimistic instead of maudlin and depressing’? And that’s how Clover came about!
Mikki Brammer Thanks so much, Jess! Yes, I’m deep into my second book now and while I won't say too much, I can say that it’s different from Clover in many ways but similar in others. (Infuriatingly vague, I know!).
