Kathleen Pennell When I moved into my present house many years ago, I was very busy getting settled making sure everything fit properly in the new house. A week or so later, I was wondering about in the backyard when I saw a word carved into an old oak tree. I stood back because it was an old carving but the word was plain to see. It said, "Help".
Kathleen Pennell I had started a seventh Pony Investigators book and suffered a serious attack of writer's block. I decided to write a short story instead and allow the writer's block to simmer on the burner. One short story led to another until I had written ten, which became The Boy on the Bench and Other Stories.
Kathleen Pennell I write even if I'm not inspired. The important thing is not to rely on "feeling" inspired. It's important to make writing a daily habit even if it's writing in your diary. Even if I'm going through a dry spell, it does not last long. One day I'll sit at my desk and the words just start to flow again.
Kathleen Pennell I just completed The Boy on the Bench and Other Stories. It's a book of ten short stories which I just love.
Kathleen Pennell Read constantly. Practice writing constantly. Over a period of time, you will be gratified to see how much your skill as a writer grows.
Kathleen Pennell The best thing about being a writer is to watch your plot and characters develop and mature over a period of time. It's also satisfying to work on a scene repeatedly until it unfolds in a manner that reflects the story you are trying to tell.
Kathleen Pennell When I suffer from writer's block, I walk away from my desk and allow my subconscious mind to work on a solution. Sometimes, the answer surfaces in an hour or two. Sometimes, it can take much, much longer. After years of writing, I've learned to wait patiently, because the solution will present itself sometimes when I least expect it.
