Having moved between apartments several times (7 times in 10 years), I always come up at least box or item short. Always, the missing item(s) is something I really like or need. So, I'd go with a treasure hunt, mystery-type theme, with a "Lost and possibly Found" resolution.
In crafting a story, the missing box and how it went missing would likely become something I left behind which comes back to haunt me, whether literally or in some nefarious way (blackmail, evidence at a murder scene, etc.).
