1. Read as much as you possibly can, especially (but not only) the kind of stuff you want to write. I really believe that a kind of "learning by osmosis" happens when you read. The more you read, the better you'll write.

I'm working on a realistic mid grade novel set in the late 1940s, so right now I'm doing a lot of research. So far I've researched city zoos, traveling toy salesmen, and my family's immigration records. This is going to be fun!
