Kelly Stone Gamble I think the best thing for me, up to this point, has been the pride my children have expressed. They are my greatest works.
Kelly Stone Gamble I have found that the best way for me to deal with writer's block is to change my scenery. Go for a walk. Take a day trip. Get away from the writing and explore the world.
Kelly Stone Gamble Read a lot. Write a lot. Revise, edit, and revise again. If someone is brutally honest about your work, thank them. Be patient. Spending years on a book to get it just right is worth it.
Being a writer takes a thick skin, and a lot of work.
Kelly Stone Gamble I was watching an informational show in a bar about koi ponds. I said to the bartender, "they look like big graves to me". He replied, "not deep enough. The body would come up with a good rain and you'd be busted." The entire story grew from there. Incidentally, the bartender is acknowledged in the book.
Kelly Stone Gamble I am a "what if" kind of person. I see something on the news, or hear a story from a friend, and think "what if something there was an added component to the story? What would have changed? What if it hadn't happened to that particular person, but someone older, younger, wiser, more naive?" It leads to stories, some of them great, some of them fire starters.
Kelly Stone Gamble I am currently working on another book set in Deacon, Kansas.
