“Did you not see her?
The brave cow
in the snow?”
Katherine Applegate, Home of the Brave
“Fear can make you panic. But sometimes it floods your body like cobra venom and leaves you frozen.”
Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Ruby
“Wobbyks have a saying, 'Grow tall as a sapling, not tall as a weed. One is watered, the other cut down.' It means that you can set yourself greater than others, but only if you're a tree that gives shade. Not if you're a useless plant that must be cut down.”
Katherine Applegate, The Only
“I cannot, will not, tell the full story of my next few hours. I'll only say that I found what I knew I must: the sun-bleached bones of everyone I'd once loved. Even knowing what I would find, I was unprepared for the knife of pain that cut through me. I half fell, half dismounted, from my pony. Kneeling on the ground, I gave in to the grief I'd held at bay for so long. I howled like an animal. I beat my fists against my chest. I wept. I don't know how long it went on. Time disappears, I suppose, when you need it to.”
Katherine Applegate, The Only
“I look at our faces
and see all the colors of the earth---
brown and pink and yellow and white and black---
and yet we all are sitting at the same desks,
wanting to learn the same things.”
Katherine Applegate, Home of the Brave
“You are Bob, untamed and undaunted.”
Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Bob
“You act like a normal human and you’ll win an Oscar,” Marco said. He led the way up to his house and opened the door. “Okay, look, you wait right there by that table. Don’t go anywhere. If my dad comes in and talks to you, just say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ Got it? Yes and no answers only. I’ll run up to my room. I’m gonna call one of the others to meet us at the bookstore. You’re already driving me nuts.” I stood by the table. There was a primitive computer on the table. It even had a solid, two-dimensional screen. And a keyboard! An actual keyboard. I touched the keyboard. It was amazing. Andalite computers once had keyboards, too. Although ours were very different. And it had been centuries since we’d used them. On the screen of the computer was a game. The object of the game was to spot the errors in a primitive symbolic language and correct them. Of course, before I could play I had to make sense of the system. But that was simple enough. Once I understood the system, it was easy to spot the errors. I quickly rewrote it to make sense out of it. I said to myself. “Hello?” I turned around. It was an older human. He was paler than Marco, but other features were similar. Marco had warned me to say nothing to his father but “yes” and “no.” “No,” I said to Marco’s father. “I’m Marco’s dad. Are you a friend of his?” “Yes.” “What’s your name?” “No,” I answered. “Your name is ‘No’?” “Yes.” “That’s an unusual name, isn’t it?” “No.” “It’s not?” “Yes.” “Yes, it’s not an unusual name?” “No.” “Now I’m totally confused.” “Yes.” Marco’s father stared at me. Then, in a loud voice, he yelled, “Hey, Marco? Marco? Would you . . . um . . . your friend is here. Your friend ‘No’ is here.” “No,” I said. “Yes, that’s what I said.” Marco came running down the stairs. “Whoa!” he cried. “Um, Dad! You met my friend?” “No?” Marco’s father said. “What?” Marco asked. Marco’s father shook his head. “I must be getting old. I don’t understand you kids.” “Yes,” I offered.
Katherine Applegate, The Alien
“I don't know what lies ahead, but we are on the precipice of war, and war changes people. I want you to stay true to what you believe. Whatever comes, remember who you are.”
Katherine Applegate, The Only
“What bothered me most, though, was that i couldn't fix anything. I couldn't control anything. It was like driving a bumper car without a steering wheel. I kept getting slammed, and I just had to sit there and hold on tight.”
Katherine Applegate, Crenshaw
“I was busy watching my taped reruns of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," Marco said, giving Rachel a sly look. "Last night, it was the one where it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.”
Katherine Applegate, The Message
“Pleasure fades, gets old, gets thrown out with last year's fad. Fear, guilt, all that stuff stays fresh.
Maybe that's why people get so enraged when someone does something to a kid. Hurt a kid and he hurts forever. Maybe an adult can shake it off. Maybe. But with a kid, you hurt them and it turns them, shapes them, becomes part of the deep, underlying software of their lives. No delete.”
Katherine Applegate, Discover the Destroyer
“Here's how I figure puppy eyes got their start.
Cave humans were sitting around a fire, wearing mammoth fur and grunting about how there was nothing on TV because TV hadn't been invented yet, and some wily wolf thought, Whoa, they've got leftover mammoth meat!
And he probably whimpered and cowered and did a tummy display and looked pathetic enough that Mr. Oog finally tossed him a bone. And soon enough, a few zillion years later: voila! Man's best friend.”
Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Bob
“I don’t want to go back to that time,” I said, my voice getting louder with each word. “I hated you for putting us through it. It wasn’t fair. Other kids don’t have to sleep in their car. Other kids aren’t hungry.” I knew that wasn’t true. I knew that lots of other kids had it worse than I did. But I didn’t care.”
Katherine Applegate, Crenshaw

A bit ripe-smelling.”
Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Family
“⭐
He did not say no, I realize.
So I try again,
just like I would have
with my own father.

Sometimes if you ask enough fathers turn maybe
into yes.”
Katherine Applegate, Home of the Brave
“It seems like I should have thought to myself, Wow, a cat is talking to me, and that is not something that usually happens at a highway rest stop.”
Katherine Applegate, Crenshaw

Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Ruby
“É uma tremenda dádiva amar quem você é.”
Katherine Applegate, Wishtree
“I knew we were lucky because we had our old Honda minivan, which had lots of room. I met a kid who lived for a whole year in one of those VW cars. It was red and round like a ladybug and just about as tiny. The poor kid had to sleep sitting up, squished between his two little sisters. Another reason we were lucky was because my sleeping box was just decoration. Some people actually live in boxes on the street.”
Katherine Applegate, Crenshaw
“Is my life more important than that of a struzzi?" Tobble asked. "Just because I am cute and cuddly?”
Katherine Applegate, The First
“wrinkled”
Katherine Applegate, Crenshaw
