Get Your Fire Back In You

Dumped out 3.5K, both in revisions and a new scene, yesterday. It feels good to have, as Ellen Foster would say, my fire back in me.

I've been dealing with so much personal stuff that some days it's all I can do to open up a file and look at the words, read a couple scenes, and tweak. There have been some 200-word days, which is about as fun as opening another hole in my head and dousing it with napalm. slogging through is a matter of sheer bloodymindedness. Some days I doubt even my...

From Script As Cow To Hypnerotomachia Poliphili

There's an interview with me over at the Book Cellar, where I talk about extreme situations and what's next for the Strange Angels series.

I feel old and slow today. So, links! First up, some hard truths about writing.

* Writers, Emmys, and Hollywood Logic.

The thing is, it's easy to decide writers "don't do anything." Particularly when they're staring out a window or pacing the parking lot, muttering, and other people are off doing the "real work." The vast bulk of a writer's job happens...

Different Worlds

Crossposted to the Deadline Dames. Check them out!

Small announcement: I will be doing #askawriter on Twitter, from 6:30-7pm, PST. Come ask me questions about writing and publishing, I will answer all I can within that timeframe. Be sure to use the hashtag! I've done #askawriter twice now, and it's been a lot of fun, not to mention good practice distilling answers into 140 characters. Also, you can check my Events Calendar. I will be putting #askawriter and other chats on there, as well as...

Short Break

The blog will be on hiatus until Friday, when I'll return with a fresh Friday writing post. I'll be popping in on Twitter occasionally, though, as time permits.

One thing before I dive, though: my best friend and beta reader, Mel Sterling (known round these parts as the Selkie,) has a short story in Norilana Fantasy's forthcoming anthology [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] ...

From Copyright To "Writer's Block"

Crossposted to the Deadline Dames. Check us out!

Still can't run. A sharp jolt of pain up my leg from the sprained toe dissuades me. However, the pain isn't as sharp as it was yesterday. I'll give myself the weekend, then dammit, I'm running again. I don't care if it hurts.

Last night I was at the PNBA Nightcapper event. The volunteers were awesome, especially Patti, who stood next to me and handed me books, soothing me all the while. I got to shake Greg Bear's hand again. (I did not pass out t...

Book Club Recap, And Writer's Magic

Tonight I'll be at the PNBA Nightcapper event (.pdf), signing copies of Strange Angels. I am told they will let the authors sit down for the signing, which is a Good Thing. My poor, poor toe.

Yes, it still hurts. No run this morning, just a walk. (An amble, more like.) And it's still colorful, too. There. You now know more than you need to know about my toe. I was felled not by a mortal enemy but by a kiddie rocking chair. I will never live this down.

I did promise a recap of the Beaverton...

Recap Later, For Now, OW!

The SF/F Book Club at the Beaverton Powell's hosted me last night, and the event was a blast. I'll post a full recap tomorrow, including the thing that made me cry with joy. Literally cry. It was magical.

Today thought, I have double the work in revisions to get done, and a swelling toe to baby. No, that wasn't at the event. It was at home, as I was getting everyone to bed. My 7-year-old boobytrapped his door with a baby rocking chair made of solid wood. I walked right into it in the dark...

Writers And Their Money, Parted

I'm going to be in the wilds of revision for a while. (Like, maybe 30K words of revision. *cries*)

But tonight I am at Powell's in Beaverton, for their SF/F Bookclub. (Details on my events page.) I am told this is a public event and that I could announce it. If you drop by, please be quiet and respectful of the book club, and I will stay briefly after the club discussion ends if you'd like me to sign something or chat a bit.

Anyway, I'm popping in today to spread the word about something else. ...

Revisions Deathmarch

I'm about to begin a revisions deathmarch–lot of stuff to rip out and gut, even more to put back in, all while producing new wordcount on a different book. This is akin to juggle flaming chainsaws while singing an aria and playing Chopsticks with your toes, all while cooking boeuf bourguignon. I'm glad I cleaned the house this weekend, because it's going to be a disaster area before I'm done.

This weekend I also updated my events page and made my events calendar public. (Not that there's ever ...

When I'm Down, I Give A Pep Talk

Good morning, everyone.

There have been some great posts recently at the Deadline Dames. Tracey O'Hara talked about feeling like an imposter in writer's clothing, Dame Devon with five easy steps to start a writing career, Dame Jackie on surviving conventions, and Dame Rachel on research.

I feel like there's not much for me to talk about today, especially as I'm still scrambling to catch up from last week's Mini Tour Madness (part I recap is here) and dealing with a couple of other personal...
