The Most Peep-tastic Party, Evah!
Last week one of my favorite indie book/toy/craft stores, Little Junebugs celebrated their one year anniversary . . . and we were there! (I mean, really, you'd think that Peepy would miss a Peep party??)
Who are those attractive witty people? Why it's Little Junebugs owners, Courtney Collins and Brian Flanagan . . .
Of course, with the party it being PEEP-themed, Peepy was in her element.
Dan Santat and I signed copies of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) and other books we created!
And lookit! Why, it's author/illustrator Ethan Long . . .
Now then, what exactly is Little Junebugs, you ask, or I ask, or someone over there asks. Why, it's may things, like a whole lot of children's books . . .
And toys . . .
And cool stuff and crafty stuff . . .
And for the anniversary party, there were professional photos of all the party Peeps!
(That's Courtney and me with Peepy.)
And everyone made Peep picture frames!
Of course, Dan and Ethan showed off their mad illustrator-ly skills . . .
Speaking of skills, you gotta see this!!! The last time I saw Mark Crilley, he drew a picture for my favorite doctor. This time, he drew this amazingly realistic picture -- and it's gone viral!!! Is there a doctor in the house?
Oops, let's return from the digression and head back to the party. All the fun made Peepy thirsty. So the kind handsome bartender created a drink just for her. Behold, the (non-alcoholic) Peep-tini!!!
Now fabulosity like this doesn't just happen. It takes a lot of work, as you can see HERE.
HAPPY 1st ANNIVERSARY, LITTLE JUNEBUGS!!!!
And finally here's a fun Q and A I did with for the South Dakota Festival of Books!!! (Don't read it if you are a fan of fine Haiku.)
===========================
Wheeeee . . . BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) is now out in paperback!

Flash Mobbers, Young Writers, KidLit Lunchers and More!!!
The Olympics were here, but we missed it. However, we did see Kate and William watering the lawn . . .
So then, last blog I promised a video of the SCBWI Summer Conference Flash Mob. Here's what everyone looks like when they are perfectly still . . .
And here's what they look like when they are flash mobbing!!!
The whole thing was masterminded by the Newbery winner Linda Sue Parkdan and her pal, writer Jolie Stekly. Here they are at dinner. Peepy is assuring them that the flash mob will be fine and that there is nothing to worry about . . .
CLICK HERE to read Linda Sue's blog about how they pulled this amazing fete together!!!!
I know! Flash mobs make me hungry, too. So let's look at some photos of author/illustrator-type people having lunch, shall we?
Here's my frequent Lunch Pal, Dan Santat (on right) with Ethan Long, who was visiting from Orlando . . .
Then, Ken Min, invited me to dine with him and Nathan Fillion, so how could I refuse? (Nathan and I have history.)
Other KidLit folk heard about it and joined us . . .
(Dan Krall, Ethan Long, Mary Peterson, Martha Brockenbrough, Nathan Fillon, Julia Shahin Collard, Sara Wilson Etienne, Paige Pooler, Rita Crayon Huang, Dan Santat, Ken Min, Wilson Swain and Karyn Raz)
But wait! What was that? School has started??? It seems like it was just summer, and you know what that means, right?
Correct! Summer writing workshops given by Moi. Here we are at the South Pasadena Public Library . . .
My writing students were looking at my Moo cards. Moo what? This is Moo . . .
(Tiny little cards that I give out as business cards/bookmarks/calling cards.)
So then, I suggested that everyone to get comfortable to write, and they did . . .
A couple of days after that, we headed to one of the oldest indie children's bookstores in the country, Once Upon a Time, in Montrose, CA, for another writing workshop . . .
The kids were soooooo talented!!!
I love Once Upon a Time. They always give me stickers!
It's always great to visit an indie bookstore, isn't it?
Next up, we'll visit an indie bookstore in Pasadena that just celebrated their one year birthday in Peeptastic style!!!

SCBWI Confidential, Part Deux, Hippies and Little Junebugs!
Where were we? Oh! Here . . .
So then, here' more behind-the-scenes and on-the-spot reporting of what went on, and yes (!!!) it's in no particular order. Oh. And I am aware that some of the photos are unusually large, but am too lazy to fix them.
We went to tres swanky party hosted by Steven Malk of Writers House . . .
(I'm represented by Writers House agent Jodi Reamer, so they pretty much had to let me in.)
There were soooo many great workshops. Here are some of the ones we attended . . .
(Above: Scholastic Book Fairs' Ed Masessa and Heather Biggs, Newbery Honorees Gary Schmidt and Eugene Yelchin, and Hat Man Jon Klassen)
What's that sign on the bathroom? Why it's because THE FOURTH STALL won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award. Here's this year's winner Chris Rylander with the first winner of the award . . .
Also at the Golden Kite Luncheon, I got to sit with my author-ly pals . . .
(From left: Susan Patron, Amy Goldman Koss, Sonya Sones, April Wayland, Linda Sue Park, Kerry Madden, Angelina Jolie, Susan Rubin, Ann Whitford Paul.)
Speaking of lunches, what's for dinner?
(That's Paula Yoo, Emily Ecton and Michael Reisman dining at the food court across the street from the conference. We discussed which one of us would run for President of the United States this year.)
On another night, Linda Sue Park, Jolie Stekly and I went to this super glam restaurant. It was so chic that we're still not sure what we ate . . .
One thing is certain, though. The meal was a thousand times better than the horrific dining event that happened to Linda Sue, Arthur Levine and I at the conference a couple of years ago.
Dinner was right before the SCBWI Hippie Hop party where mild-mannered children's book people went wild. No, really. If you don't believe me, see for yourself . . .
But the culmination of the evening was a FLASH MOB!!!! Super secret e-mails had gone out earlier to all but Lin Oliver and Steve Mooser, founders of SCBWI. Here's what over 400 people dancing in-sync to The Age of Aquarius look like . . .
(We'll post footage of actual flash mobbing on a future blog.)
After the conference was over, the faculty, regional advisors, SCBWI staff and board convened to collapse (and to eat and have fun) . . .
Oh, look. That's Jay Asher on the left (above). We were passing notes during the conference . . .
THIS IS WHY.
And finally, the next day, there was a Board of Advisors meeting. BatPeep fell asleep during it. Not because it wasn't interesting, but because she was exhausted from all the amazing happenings . . .
Wait, what's that? Look who's on the cover of VOGUE!!!!
Hey, that's not VOGUE . . . it's even better . . . it's VOYA!!!! CLICK HERE to read a WARP SPEED review, and to find out what Libba Bray, David Lubar, Don Calame and I have to say about writing funny stuff.
Hey, want to meet me and Peep and have a Peep-o-time at one of my local indie bookstores?
Sometimes fun is in your own backyard . . .
(Disclaimer: That may, or may not, be my real backyard.)
For example, I first found out about Little Junebugs when I was at
LitFest Pasadena . . .
This awesome children's bookstore also has the coolest stuff, PLUS you can do the most amazing crafts . . .
If don't just believe me, see for yourself . . .
See this rocket? It's a prize for a lucky reader!
Here's even more of the store . . .
And look! This is THE PLACE to get crafty . . .
It's not just for kids -- check out this wizardlywondrous (I just made up that word) Harry Potter craft night for grown-ups!!!
Whoa . . . who's that with Peepy? Why, it's Courtney, co-owner of Little Junebugs!!!
Peepy and I will be helping Courtney celebrate the ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY of Little Junebugs this Saturday! Newly printed paperbacks of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) will be there, too, along with Bobby illustrator Dan Santat.,
JOIN US!!!!

An Insider's Look at the SCBWI Conference

It was that time of year again. YES! The annual SCBWI Summer Conference.

It kicked off with faculty party, where the literati gliterati gathered to mingle, practice their Olympic diving routines, consume small plates of food, and get briefed about the upcoming conference by Lin Oliver and Steve Mooser . . .

It was great fun seeing old (as in "we have met before," not as in "wow, look at those wrinkles") friends and new ones . . .

(That's Sonya Sones, there's Dan Yaccarino being mystic, and look -- Dan Gutman with Lin Oliver)
Hello, Candace Fleming! And here's Lee Wind with my editor Arthur Levine who/whom you will see often since he is an excellent mingler . . .

Well, well, there's E.B. Lewis again. (We hung out HERE not long ago), Jolie Stekly shares her pretty drink with BatPeep (I'm not sure where Peepy was) and Dan Santat is always generous about sharing his food . . .

Agent Rubin Pfeffer offered to represent BatPeep, Lissa Price said hello, and Steve Mooser confided that he was glad BatPeep was there to make sure everything went smoothly . . .

We came across our editor again, Arthur Levine, chatting and chewing with Grammar Goddess Martha Brockenbrough and Mathew Kirby who was afraid to speak, lest Martha catch a split infinitive . . .

The next day kicked off the conference. (That was my attempt at a metaphor.)

There were 1,242 attendees from 46 states and 15 countries. 171 were male, 941 were female, and 122 were undeclared. Oh, and we counted and there was only one BatPeep, plus there was a Eugene Yelchin, and a Lee Wardlaw, and a Nikki Grimes, and a Karen Cushman . . .

Gary Schmidt experienced his first BatPeep encounter, as did Bryan Collier and Patricia MacLachlan . . .

The opening keynote was delivered by none other than Arthur Levine! This is the glorious 15 Year Anniversary of his imprint, Arthur A. Levine Books, and he talked about the timelessness of some of books that he's edited . . .

The books included The Arrival by Shaun Tan, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, and Millicent Min, Girl Genius by . . . ME!!!!!! Yes, ME!!!! Oops. Um. Sorry. I'll try to calm down now.

Here's Arthur and Moi in a totally casual museum-quality photo . . .

(Arthur pulled me out of the slush pile eons ago and we've been together ever since.)
Later, Tony DiTerlizzi (who has a spectacular studio and bathroom), gave an energetic keynote and bravely showed us his Luke Skywalker hair, and Ed Masessa and Bobbie Pyron fought over BatPeep, plus I signed an iPad!

The SCBWI bookstore offered tomes by the distinguished faculty and sold millions and billions-ish of books that the authors/illustrators signed at the autograph party . . .

The SCBWI Portfolio Show is were lots of careers have been launched. Since we're on the SCBWI Board of Advisors, BatPeep and I got a sneak peek . . .

A separate committee selects who will be mentored by top names in the children's art world. Of course, the judges conferred with BatPeep before making their final selections . . .

We interrupt this conference blog with this -- Whooooaaaa!!! Want to see THE CUTEST DOG IN THE WORLD reading her MOST FAVORITE BOOK? Then click here!!!!
We'll have more SCBWI in an upcoming blog, so stay tuned. And for a more coherent account of the conference, click here.

Curious Bookstore, Candyland, and a Peep Party (soon)!!!

I am here . . .

Yet, because of time machine issues and whatnot, my blog is here . . .

If there's one thing that I like as much as lunch, it's candy! Here's a WONDERFUL candy store named Robitaille's in the quaint beach town of Carpinteria, CA . . .

Public Health Reminder. Visit the dentist and brush your teeth. A lot.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled blog.
Where were we? Oh, that's right. CANDY!!!!

How can it get any better than that, you ask? Here's how -- YES! An indie children's bookstore!!! Here's the owner of Curious Cup, Kiona Gross . . .

And here's the inside of Curious Cup Bookstore . . .

Curious Cup has only been open for about a year and already has quite a following. Congrats Kiona!

(Kiona is seen here with her new friend, Peepy.)
Hey! Speaking of indie bookstores, this is where Peepy and I, along with copies of the new paperback version of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES), will be on August 25th!!! Come join us for Peep-tastic fun!

Being on a Comic-Con Panel + Everyone Meets BatPeep

Oh man. So much went on at Comic-Con 2012, we had to use our lightsaber and split the blog into two parts.

After our first day, Son and I came away with lots of awesome stuff . . .

Of course, we had to go back for more, plus everyone wanted their photo taken with BatPeep . . .

It wasn't all fun and games. Well, okay, it was!

We were on the Heroes for the Middle Grade Reader (And You, Too!) panel . . .

Some of our fellow panelist included, Tony DiTerlizzi with Emily Janice Card looking on and wondering if now would be a good time to pull out his chair, agent-turned-author Nathan Bransford (does he represent himself, I wonder?), and Cornelia Funke . . .

We sat next to Brandon Mull on the panel, and during the book signing we were next to panel moderator, author Michael Spradlin . . .

We took this museum quality photo while the audience was filtering in and then listening as the panel did a group song about heroes. (Or not.)

Here's what the audience saw. (Thanks to Ken Min for the photos.)

See that totally cool bag that E.J. Altbacker is holding?

Well, even though I loved it . . . I GAVE MY BAG TO HIM!!!!
Why?
Because I am nice and because he is a writer for the Green Lantern: The Animated Series didn't have one of the bags.
Oh, look! It's David Saylor, VP/Creative Director/Fashion Model of Scholastic Book Group (one of those is not true, yet) and Scholastic Senior Publicist Sheila Marie Everett . . .

Ouch but true fact: Years ago, Sheila Marie and I met at ALA in New Orleans. She was new to Scholastic and one of her first assignments was to accompany me to an event to make sure I got there safely. So what did I do?

I FELL OUT OF A TAXI!!! (I am known to be a klutz.) Yes, I opened a cab door, and fell out onto the ground. Sheila Marie was horrified and recalled thinking that she would have to tell her boss, "I broke my author."
Oops. Back to the future. Look at what we got!

Thanks, Comic-Con -- we had a great time!!!

(For clearer photos of Comic-Con, check out Publishers Weekly's round up, here.)
Hey! Why go to the SCBWI Summer Conference? Here are lots of great reasons from a bevy of published authors, including Moi, on the Ink and Angst Blog.

2012 Comic-Con Confidential -- Starring BatPeep

Last year was our first year at Comic-Con in San Diego . . .

To say that it was overwhelming is an understatement. But we were thrilled to be there this year, again . . .

Our first reaction upon seeing the sea of people was to flee in the opposite direction.

However, we braved the crowds. Why? Because the number one reason people go to Comic-Con is to have their photos taken with BatPeep, that's why! (I won't reveal who's really behind that mask, but here's a hint.

We saw lots of interesting things and many, many, many people, creatures and monsters, and superheroes, and did I mention many, many, many people? There were an estimated 130,000 people + one BatPeep there.

Look! It's famed animator Bill Plympton. (LOVE his work.) And there's one of Jane Austen's characters -- reimagined . ..

Others things/people we saw included . . .

There was so much stuff, it (and the many, many people) spilled outside . . .

Back inside there was this . . .

Who are those attractive young people with no pores or flab? Why, it's the kids from GLEE!!!

We attended a panel on comics and music, and then roamed around more . . .

We'll have more about Comic-Con in our next blog, including scenes from out Middle Grade Heroes Panel . . .

In the meantime, there's this photo roundup from Publisher's Weekly, and this . . .

Oh! And one more thing -- BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) made The Horn Book's list of recommended sports books!.

UPCOMING JULY STUFF . . .
July 27 - South Pasadena Library Writing Workshop for Kids
July 30 - Once Upon a Time Bookstore - Get Your Pens Out Writing Club

Mo Willem's Lunch Bunch, A Shorn Dog, and Pre-Comic-Con

Just got back from Comic-Con . . .

We'll be blogging about that next. (I'm still trying to recover from the chaos.) But in the meantime, there's this . . .
It's a well documented fact that I like bookish lunches, and I like to lunch with fellow KidLitters. Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. Let me rephrase that -- I like to lunch with fellow authors/illustrators in the KidLit arena.
(Here's proof. Here's proof. Here's proof. Here's . . . well, you get it.)
Not long ago Mo Willems was in town. So a bunch of us met up. It took a bit of wrangling, but everyone finally assembled.

Here's animator/author/illustrator Tom Warburton; Cheryl Willems (Mo's better half); author/animator/illustrator (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!) Bob Boyle; animation background artist

As with most author/illustrator lunches, much time is spent mocking each other out . . .

Luckily for us, Tom took classy photos of us eating . . .

Therefore, if you'd like actual proof that food was consumed, CLICK HERE to be magically transported to Tom's blog.
In other news, look what I got in the mail!!!
Yes! It's the paperback version of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES). The book will be in stores on August 1.

Now, on a much sadder note, My Labradoodle, who is hypoallergenic and great for families like mine who have allergies, was diagnosed with . . . allergies. It didn't help that she loves to roll around in the grass and pick up burrs and whatnot.

So the vet ordered a haircut. The first ever haircut she's even had. There was much sadness when this tragic event occurred . . .

So let this be a lesson to you. If you want to keep your stylish hairdo, don't roll around in the burrs.
And finally, if you want to catch a great movie, I highly recommend this one . . .

Next Blog: Behind-the-scenes, and in the midst, of the madness called Comic-Con!!!

After Hours at ALA

The American Library Association (ALA) Conference is way extensive. If you don't believe me, look here and here.

So what does one do after they've conquered the conference floor?

Simple. They collapse.

(Above: San Francisco Librarian Carla Kozak naps with her favorite Peep.)
FunCarlaFact #1: She was on the Newbery committee that selected one of my favorite books as the winner, WALK TWO MOONS.

FunCarlaFact#2: She gave "Cousin Carla" to me. You can see Cousin Carla co-starring in this video.
(Disclaimer: No actual Peeps were injuring in the making and/or microwaving of this video.)
Now, even though everyone is exhausted after a full day of conferencing, there's not much time to recharge because the evenings are full of parties!
Scholastic had their annual ALA Family Dinner at a tres chic restaurant a couple of miles down the road. I opted to drive rather than board the bus Scholastic had rented. Only, I got stuck in traffic . . .

So I texted my pal Dan Santat to see if everyone on the bus was as frustrated with the traffic as I was . . .

That's when I learned that the "bus" was a Hummer limo!!!
Since I beat the limo to the restaurant, Peeps and I checked out the place . . .

Then the limo arrived . . .

The party began with much mingling . . .

Celebrating new books and old friends were Publicity and Marketing V.P. Tracy Van Straaten with author/V.P. & Editorial Director David Levithan, and author/V.P. & Executive Editor Andrea Davis Pinkney, who was on the TODAY show not too long ago . . .

Eisner Award winner Raina Talgemeier was there, and so was debut author Sharon Cameron with author/Executive Editor Lisa Ann Sandell . . .

THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET author/illustrator/Caldecott winner Brian Selznick was WONDERSTRUCK by book flyers a fan made of his book, and NY TIMES bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater mistook Peepy for a snack . . .

Director of Library and Educational Marketing, John Mason hung out with authors Wendy Shang and Sharon Flake; and the Scholastic team who pulled the evening together included Candace Green and Emily Heddleson . . .

Everyone was talking about Trent Reedy's" moving speech at the conference; and it's always wonderful seeing Caldecott medalist Allen Say . . .

Lori Benton, VP and Group Publisher, Trade Publishing, welcomed everyone, and then it was time to eat!

By the way, is it just me or does everyone else notice an onslaught of author/editors???!!!
Peepy approved of the menu and was pleased to be named #1. What a wonderful conference!!!

In other news, look who's on the cover of the South Pasadena Library local authors brochure!

(Hint: It's me!)

More ALA + Jack Gantos's Criminal Intent
Do you know who this is?
We'll talk about him later. But first, when last we blogged, we were at ALA seeing ex-National Ambassadors of Young People's Literature, like Jon Sciezcka . . .
Well, guess what? We're still there, even if the authors are not. Huh? Lemme explain. Through the magic of my Time Machine, I bring you more authors and illiustrators and book people like this fellow who is channeling Penny (see lower left of photo), plus this other fellow . . .
(That's David Macinnis Gill. In the first photo.)
Look! It's Newbery-ian Susan Patron with Betsy Rosenthal, and there's author/WONDERSTRUCK editor Tracy Mack . . .
Illustrator Joe Cepeda and I did the rounds of the convention floor together, and lo and behold, Laini Taylor and Maybe have the same color hair!
Question for Joe: Does your office always look this neat?
The last time I hung out with author/runner Wendelin Van Draanen, it was snowing. And look! AMULET'S Kazu Kibuishi and his wife cartoonist Amy Kibuishi . . .
Over at the Scholastic booth I found editor Bonnie Verberg and my awesome sales rep, Roz Hilden. And who's that handsome guy? Why, that's Scholastic's Antonio Gonzalez who handles all of my author visits!
It's always fun to see the Scholastic Book Fairs team. In the past, team members have even strutted their stuff for Peepy!
Debut author Mike Jung, signed along with my lunch buddy Dan Santat and James Burks, while Sibert Honor author Larry Dane Brimner showed Peepy his award-winning book . . .
Neal Shusterman and I have gone to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter together, but this time missed out on Disneyland (which was next door to the convention center).
However, National Book Award Winner Sherman Alexie created a new fashion sensation with his glasses, while prolific author Caroline Arnold tried sunglasses on Peepy while Curious City's Kirsten Cappy and Charlesbridge's Donna Spurlock looked on . . .
Caldicott Honor winner Melissa Sweet and my Peep met for the first time, and that's when Peepy noticed that this year's Newbery winner, Jack Gantos, was in the lurking around somewhere . . .
Jack wanted to give Peepy a tattoo . . .
But when she declined, an argument ensued and someone was tossed to the ground!!!! Wha . . .??? Should we sue for assault and battery???
I'm not sure what went on between the two of them, because they were friendly the last time they met . . .
BTW, Jack announced at the Newbery dinner that the rights to his autobiographic book about his short-lived life as a criminal, HOLE IN MY LIFE, has been purchased by Harry Potter, er, Daniel Radcliffe.
Here's Jack, and Daniel . . .
Although, I could really imagine James Franco as a young Jack Gantos. What do you think?
(Fun Fact: James Franco's mother is a children's book author. Click here to see who she is.)
