Sequoias. Some day, I’ll pack my family into a camper and drive all the way across this great country, and finally give one of these giants a heart-to-heart hug. Even in pictures I can feel their immense power. They inspire the Rianave trees, which are introduced in Elliot’s story.

Where do you dream to go, more than anywhere in the world?

It’s 1-11! I have been noticing a lot of repeating numbers lately, especially 11:11. Some people believe 11:11 and 1:11 means positive change is coming. I like to believe that, too. But I’m getting off the subject! Listen, the name of this blog is Missyflitts for a reason. Most of what I plan to post here is pretty unapologetically random. That brings me to my muses for today: The Sweet Boys podcast! These guys never fail to make me smile and pick me up when I’m down. They talk about everything and nothing, and are absolutely hilarious and inspiring the entire time. I love their quirky, goofy nature and wholesome friendship. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I go listen to them. I hope you will, too!

I have the most ingenious, life-changing invention which allows me to turn on my coffee maker with my phone. I can switch it on as soon as I wake up and by the time I get downstairs, it’s all ready! It only works if I set it up the night before, though.

Are you a coffee drinker? I usually have 1-2 cups in the morning with oat milk and a splash of flavored creamer. My current favorite mug was an offering from ceramicist Paula Marian for an NCECA benefit. Paula was my high school ceramics teacher, and the first person outside of my family to recognize and encourage me as an artist and creative.

I love this mug so much. It fits perfectly on my warmer, it feels great in my hand, and I adore how unique and special it is to me. Support artists where you can, you won’t be disappointed!

Fantasy Friday 1-8-2021
My very first fantasy influence I can remember is Jim Henson. I watched Sesame Street way back in the late 70s and fell in love with Big Bird and Snuffleupagus. I know it’s not strictly fantasy, but this concept of imagination and pretend was a seed planted by Jim Henson which grew and blossomed deep into my childhood, from Fraggle Rock to Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. What’s your first memory of fantasy?

Throwback Thursday 1-7-2021
Slide the slider to see Call of Kythshire’s old cover compared to the new version! Did you know the Keepers of the Wellsprings series was originally called the Half-Realm Saga? I chose the original swirly cursive font because it reminded me of Mage Mark. But I love the newer version so much more, with Azi’s silhouette on the cover and the actual Mage Mark vines ominously curling into the brighter areas. Which do you like better?

Writing Wednesday 1-6-2021
Recently I went on a writer’s retreat to Porches in Norwood, Virginia. In their welcome binder, I found this beautiful passage by Martha Graham that set the mood for my long weekend of writing. Every one of us has value. What you create must exist. Believe in yourself. If you want to be a writer, write. If you want to be an artist, create. Don’t deny the world your unique gift. It’s not up to you to decide whether your work is any good. You’re worthy. Happy Wednesday!

So many of the places in my books are inspired by real life places, like this incredible monastery in Greece called Meteory. Imagine an entire kingdom perched on an ocean cliffside like this…

AURORA is a Norwegian artist whose music I absolutely adore. While I was writing Call of Kythshire, I had this song on repeat. She reminds me a lot of Azi, her lyrics are thought invoking, and her voice is otherworldly. I got to see her live in 2019 and gifted her my first two books. It was an incredible experience!

Sunday Sketch 1-3-2021
This week’s Sunday sketch is one of my favorite, random things to sketch. One day, I’ll write a novel about these head villages…
