Identity Designed #006

If there are two or three good ideas I’m struggling to choose between, I’ll often show my client one carefully considered sketch for each direction. I’ll describe why they’re strong fit and how they might adapt to various applications. But most of the time sketches go unseen, because it’s my job to show what works, not what doesn’t.

A glimpse into my logo sketchbook.

As always, many thanks for reading. I appreciate you being here.

Identity Designed #005

That new book I mentioned last time out... Delighted to have partnered with Rockport to get my next title on the market, Identity Designed: The Process.

For my last book, ID, sixteen top studios were interviewed, with each sharing best-practices for working with clients and developing strong, enduring visual identities.

This one takes a different approach.

Divided into four sections — research, strategy, design, and implementation — The Process is filled with lessons from my almost two decades in b...

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of sitting down in The Merchant with Blair Enns of Win Without Pitching (joined by his lovely wife Colette). Blair and I have been in touch for 15 years, but we’d yet to meet in person. Among other things, we talked about new books, publishing versus self-publishing, digital distraction, and solo-walks across Spain. If you’ve yet to read Blair’s Manifesto, it’s excellent, highly recommended.

As always, many thanks for reading.

This edition’s headed by the classic “Tate by Tube” poster, designed by David Booth back in the late 80s. The paint tube shows the name (Pimlico) and map location of the Tate Gallery’s nearest station. Semi-related, here’s a brief history of the London Underground logo.

As always, many thanks for reading.

Identity Designed #001

Been about a year since my last email (where does it go?), so in case you’re wondering, this is my infrequent newsletter on visual identities, logo design, and other things of interest. Unless you’re a recent subscriber, rest assured, you signed-up at some point, either through identitydesigned.com, logodesignlove.com, or davidairey.com, but if you’re cutting down on emails (I definitely get that), there’s an unsubscribe link right at the bottom.

If you’re staying with me, beautiful. The newslett...
