Mission Log 1:20 – More Questions

Fixing up the fighter has been posing some challenges.

When Mila shimmied after me through the tunnel to meet the fighter, she patted it on the side and told the thing it was a good ship, a brave ship, and that we’d fix it up in no time. I knew I liked her for a reason.

For the last week, she and I have been returning through the crumpled passage every single day, crawling through what I’ve been calling the ‘access tunnel’ to visit the beauty. The first order of business was to pound the f...

Mission Log 1:19 – Love at First Sight

I know I was skeptical about your market idea to begin with Colonel—all right, I still am, if I’m being honest—but the others have really taken to it.

Melanie, the one with the two kids? She found a bakery, complete with a pantry stuffed full of ingredients. Everything past this one double-latched door was still good, too. Flour, sugar, molasses. The works.

I don’t know how the food could stay good for so long, but the fact that it’s here definitely eased our minds. Now we’ve got fruit in ...

Mission Log 1:18 – When Are You Going to Tell Them?

Colonel, respectfully, I share your concern about Ford’s little mishap the other day. I absolutely do. And I agree that a project would help keep everyone out of trouble. In theory.

Cleaning up the market sector, though? It just feels so… permanent.

It feels like giving up.

But since everyone else seemed to be enamored of the place when we hiked through it before, and I did want to go back to the bookshop, I made your suggestion.

And yes, I took it as a suggestion; I’m not military a...

Mission Log 1:17 – I Can Be Optimistic

I still haven’t made it back to the bookshop, Colonel. I know you want me to investigate further over there; your last message seemed much more concerned about that than, I don’t know, the murderous bots that tried their best to end me the last time I opened the door. What are you looking for?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t get back, because today Ford tried to kill us all.

Now that Mr. Politician had seen the bots with his own eyes, it suddenly became imperative that he confir...

Mission Log 1:16 – …And a Target

As the bots bore down on us, there were two thoughts running through my head.

First, that I couldn’t—I wouldn’t—let them tear the medical facility apart. Not happening. We needed this place. Bertram needed this place. End of story.

And two: that David appeared to be right; the bots were very much focused on me.

The swarm buzzed into the room in undulating waves, filling the space below the ceiling. I didn’t remember seeing so many before, but then my head had been under attack at the ti...

Mission Log 1:15 – An Affinity

Note: This week’s episode is a BIT longer than usual — I couldn’t find a good place to slice it in half for ease of reading. Next week’s a bit shorter, though, so it’ll balance out 🙂 -Kate

I wanted to go back to the bookshop first thing the next morning, but Ford was all up and at ‘em as soon as the lights came on in the jungle, assigning tasks and making plans to build structures we can live in.

Which is weird, because we’re in a structure—the jungle notwithstanding—and I haven’t seen any ...

Mission Log 1:14 – Bots and Books, and More Mysteries

Every once in a while, I churn out a brilliant thought. And every once in a while, the results of that thought even turn out the way I wanted them to, instead of exploding in my face.

Any Alliance pilot worth her paycheck knows how to short circuit an escape hatch. No one wants to be stuck in a bird without multiple escape routes—which include, but are not limited to: jimmying, breaking, shooting, wrenching, kicking, screaming, and cutting through layers of glass and metal.

In the case of ...

Mission Log 1:13 – That’s Quite a Story

I didn’t think I was headed anywhere in particular after my blowup with Ford—the blowup being a hundred percent on my side and zero on his, which only made it more frustrating—but somehow I ended up back at my mystery door.

Everyone else was so entranced by the cute little twists and turns in the market sector, though truth be told, I found it all a bit creepy. Oh, I’m sure it was adorable back in its heyday. Whenever that might have been, and wherever. But now? Now, it’s a cobbled together b...
