What Could Have Been by Luke Melia - Book Review
Fantasy has never been a genre that I used to look forward to. However, parallel universes and time travel have intrigued me to no end. Hence What Could Have Been by Luke Melia is a book in the fantasy genre, amalgamated with suspense, that hooked me to it.
What Could Have Been by Luke Melia
BlurbWhat Could Have Been tells a story of trauma, expectation, obsession, and loss, explored through five distinct parts spanning over three decades. Two strangers, Dale and Heather, meet by chance while on holiday in Greece. As their hands touch for a fraction of a second, they experience a day in an alternate future where they are married and have a family. When the day ends, they are pulled back to reality, weighed down with the memories of a lost lifetime. This vision causes their lives to intensely intertwine, impacting their decisions, relationships and identities. The two must navigate the complexities of what they mean to one another, as they struggle to rationalize an event nobody else could possibly understand and mourn a life that never existed.PlotDale meets Suzanne and instantly gets connected with her. On a Holiday with Suzanne, Dale meets Heather and Lyndon, who are deeply in love with each other. On the brief trip, accidentally Dale and Heather's fingers touch and they are taken to an alternative reality. They live the reality for thirty years in a few seconds in the current world. However, those thirty years of vision in the future change their present lives so as to change the future in the current reality as well. Everything changes, right from Dale and Heather's feelings for each other to their relationship with their partners, friends, and family. Deeply pained by the tug of war between two worlds, Dale end up worrying What if they hadn't boarded the boat, What if their fingers hadn't touched, What if they didn't get pulled into the future. What could have been...NarrationThe author has time and again proven that his craft is impeccable. But here the unprecedented plot, with such untoward incidents rattle the brains of the readers. Nonetheless, the author has managed to put everything in place and make sense for the readers to go about. The plot takes off at a supreme speed but it drops somewhere in the middle. With a complicated plot like this, the book could have been monotonous or indecipherable but the author has prioritized the characters and the emotions. When Dale and Heather live different lives the vision and the turmoil that they go through is beautifully depicted. One more round of developmental edits could have been done. Like Dale and Heather, it left me wondering What Could Have Been, had the book been holding a tighter plot. But the same has not taken away the reading experience for the readers.
The two realities are seamlessly merged and the readers are connected to the people in both. The relation between Anne and Dale is one that stands out in the whole book. How they care for each other while pulling each other's legs and also how the rejection from one hurts the other which in turn changes everything for them is endearing and heartwrenching to read. Overall the book, despite being a fantasy, is a touching one that pitched into the various realms in the matter of the heart.

Vijaypat Singhania's Autobiography - An Incomplete Life
Taking birth in an aristocratic and ending up without a roof over his head, Vijaypat Singhania's life is no less than a grandma's tale. Once at the apex of the legendary Ramond Industries how this great man ended up settling his family dispute in court is something that should be taught in all management classes.

Blurb‘If only I knew then what I know now, my life would be completely different.’In February 2015, an unforeseen setback cost Vijaypat Singhania, the erstwhile Chairman Emeritus of Raymond Group, the work of his life and his cherished family home. One of India’s most legendary industrialists, today he is fighting a battle to recover all that he has lost. In his first and only autobiography, he traces his extraordinary life from an anguished childhood to the many dynamic decades he spent at Raymond and the tumultuous years after. Born into the famed Singhania family, Vijaypat was always expected to take up the storied family business. But not one to be deterred from pursuing his own passions, he also nurtured his love for adventure in the skies and broke two world records as an aviator, served a brief stint as a professor, and even became the sheriff of Mumbai for a time. All the while, under his stewardship, the Raymond Group diversified into new segments, with Raymond soon being recognized as one of India’s most trusted apparel brands. And then a singular misstep set in motion a grave misfortune … Intimate, candid, and deeply moving, An Incomplete Life is in fact a rare glimpse into a life lived to the fullest but marked by the painful sting of regret and heartbreaks. The unbelievable taleWe have heard and read a lot of success stories but to tell a tale of failure or loss takes immense courage. An Incomplete Life by Vijaypat Singhania is a no-nonsense account of the simple yet majestic life of the great man.Did you ever know that he is responsible for an airport in Surat? This and many unheard stories are mentioned in the book. The book does not have a straight trajectory of experiences. He has adopted an informal style of narration wherein he shares his memory with his readers with an ease that connects the reader with the author so as to think that the story was narrated over a cup of coffee or glass of drink. The author has circumvented some of the uneasy circumstances, probably to safeguard the privacy of his family members but simultaneously he has been brutally honest about some of the situations. However, he hasn't shown any qualms to anyone throughout the book. The book is about the lessons he learned from life and the author has spread the message of positivity at the end of the day.

The Pleasure and Pain of Love and War in Bosnia by Humayun Kabir
Is it possible to fall in love with someone amidst the gory scenes of death and dead bodies? If the story was not been narrated by someone who has been there in the middle of the chaos it would have been tough to believe. But Love and War in Bosnia by Humayun Kabir is a tale of the pleasure of the matters of the heart amidst the pain of death, narrated by someone who has been there in Bosnia during the civil war.

However, it doesn't take away the fact that the author's narration is impeccably believable. The author has managed to teleport the readers to the snow-filled alleys of Sarajevo. The relationship between Sabyasachi and Suzanne, the acquaintance, the friendship, the romance - everything grew over time and naturally. There are no unrealistic proclamations of love or unwarranted love-making sequences. The author has beautifully narrated the relationship between two mature human beings.
Of late, I refrain from taking review copies of the so-called love stories by best-selling authors because all we could see is the forced attraction between the protagonists, and comes out as a namesake erotic romance that underestimated the readers' capability to fathom matters of heart otherwise.I am so entangled in the pain and pleasure shared by Sabyasachi and Suzanne that I want to read this book again. I wanted to keep on writing more about the book but I leave it unsaid because "i don't like spoilers, Pushpa'

While formulating my diet plans, going sugar-free has been the first step that I suggest to my clients. However, they used to ask me if they could at least have something that tastes sweet. Jaggery and honey have been my choices of substitutes because they had an immense amount of iron and other minerals. However, their glycemic indexes used to be high and could not be suggested to those with diabetes. Hence Ultimate Sugarfree Desserts has been a valuable add-on for me as now I can suggest various recipes for my clients in terms of weight loss as well as diabetes treatment.

Diagnosed with diabetes at age fifteen, Harsh Kedia spent the next few years of his life having to forego all of his most-loved desserts. Deprived of birthday cakes, laddus and all things sweet as a teenager, he decided to create recipes that would allow everyone suffering from diabetes to have their favourite foods again.
In Ultimate Sugar-free Desserts, Kedia, popularly known as ‘A Diabetic Chef’ on social media, shares more than 50 recipes to whip up delectable treats using stevia, a plant-based sugar substitute. With home cooks in mind, he covers an astonishing variety of some of our favourite desserts, from indigenous sweets such as gajar ka halwa, rasmalai and sandesh to gourmet delicacies like strawberry custard tarts, éclairs and peanut butter cookies, along with a mouth-watering array of healthy smoothies and lip-smacking beverages. It’s time to have your cake and eat it too!My ReviewThe author is called a diabetic chef for a reason. He has shared 50 recipes that are slurp-worth and healthy. For someone looking for a sugar substitute, Stevia, and Erythritol is the choices with the least glycemic index but recipes that can bring about the maximum taste with these substitutes is tough to find as stevia is often found in the indigenous western cuisines or so I thought. The author has deftly incorporated the substitutes in Indian desserts like rasmalai and Gajar ka halwa making them enjoyable for everyone and helping us in a guilt-free indulgence.
The book is divided into four parts - Desi Desserts, Videshi Desserts, Smoothies and Bowls, and finally Beverages. All recipes can be prepared within half an hour. The author has refrained from any unwanted gimmicks to make the book look huge. This is one put-off factor that I used to find in the cook books of late. We need to literally skim through the books to find the recipes but ultimate Sugar-free Desserts are just simple and in tact. The author has also given a conversion table at the end which makes it possible to be read and used across the globe. Another seemingly menial yet important factor is the quality of the pages. We often use the cook books inside the kitchen and while checking and rechecking the ingredients and methods, we tend to use wet hands and spoil the book. Here the pages are set in such a way that we can use them with even wet hands (not always).

I have grown up hearing Soundarya Lahri recited by my mother. But hardly did I grasp the essence and seldom did I make an effort to. A translation of the same to either my mother tongue or English is something that I have been looking forward to. Soundarya Lahri translated from Sanskrit by Mani Rao is a boon for someone who finds it difficult to grasp the essence of Sanskrit Verses.Saundarya Lahari Translated from The Sanskrit by Mani RaoBlurb'A joyful rendition of an iconic text' - Arundhathi Subramaniam
Saundarya Lahari is a popular Sanskrit hymn celebrating the power and beauty of Sakti, the primordial goddess. In one hundred verses, it underlines the centrality of the feminine principle in Indian thought.Attributed to Adi Sankaracarya, Saundarya Lahari is a valuable source for understanding tantric ideas. Every verse is associated with yantras and encoded mantras for tantric rituals, and specific verses in the hymn are considered potent for acquiring good health, lovers, and even poetic skills.Mani Rao's Saundarya Lahari is an inspired, lyrical translation that renders the esoteric immediate and the distant near. The Wave of BeautySaundarya Lahari is a Sanskrit work attributed to Adi Shankara which tells about the tantra method of devotion. It is all about the union of Shiva and Shakti which translates to the activation of Kundalini. The English translation of the book is a one-liner translation of the wonderful book. Much need not be written about the original as it is the best and it has been there for centuries.Speaking about the translation, the author has rightfully made it simple without many embellishments and add-ons. This makes the book all the more endearing because the author did not impose his perspective and put the book up there for the readers to understand.I am reading the book one line/page or a few lines/pages per day, slowly and imbing the essence because I need the space and the book gives the comfort.

At 70, I might be preparing myself for the impending end of the story, lying on a couch, counting numerous illnesses, and whining about the kids not being considerate. Or so is the common practice of parents and grandparents who are past 70. But here I see a woman who is a mother, and grandmother who is worried about her soaring body weight and decided to embark on an intermittent fasting journey and looking forward to her salon appointment. Insatiable by Shobha De is primarily her gourmet experience but it is also a book that gives various life lessons which we might ignore otherwise.

'I promise not to be three things--profound, pedantic and pretentious,' says Shobhaa De, as she begins her heart-warming book.
It's a promise India's most beloved writer delivers on in her irreverent memoir about the year leading up to her landmark seventy-fifth birthday. With quintessential exuberance and keen observations firmly in place, she tells us about traveling solo, feasting (and fasting) with family and friends, the triumphs and losses that accompany ageing, the vagaries and vulnerabilities of being a writer and, above all, how food connects people in the most unexpected places and delightful ways.
From where to find the most delicious lassi in Jaipur, her obsession with kasundi and conversations with a Nobel Laureate who is a gourmet to M.F. Husain's last food khwaish and what's served at Aamir Khan's dinner table, Shobhaa takes us into the dining rooms of politicians, artists and celebrities, to festivals and parties and other social events, and, more privately, into her home, where food is always the prime subject of conversation.
In Insatiable, Shobhaa reminds us of the many delights and disappointments that the banquet of life offers, even as she examines the shared emotional hunger for happiness and love that binds us all.
The woman she is - Shobha DeShobha De is an author who has assured an undeniable position in Indian Literature. She is not the flagbearer of the so-called feministic propaganda but she, instead of telling, shows what real feminism and equality are. The book has multiple instances where we can see how the spouses Mr. and Mrs. Dey have given each other individual space.
The author is a self-proclaimed and visible foodie who engages various emotions with the food she eats. She is a Maharashtrian married to a Gujarati family. However, her cuisines and food experiences are not limited to these two states.
The author with her cosmopolitan life introduces the readers to various cuisines that many of us would not dream to try. Moreover, her take on relationships be it with her husband or kids or even friends for that matter give a new definition to life. The author has deftly shown us how letting go can save relations.
She is not preachy the monologue about the incidents coupled with food stories never get monotonous due to her sheer craft. However. towards the second half, the stories show a pattern and there the pace of reading drops a bit. However if you have been a Shobha De fan, you wouldn't DNF the book because you would want to know which story that she is about to share.

Pure Delight of Food - Review of Cooking For Happiness by Kornelia Santoro
Mental health and physical health and invariably interconnected. We often fall sick when we are going through any trauma, big or small. On the other hand, a properly set diet is sure to improve your mental health. Kornelia Santoro, after fighting depression for years, underwent psychotherapy and emerged as a winner, and survivor. Further, she ventures into extensive research on the food that improves your mood and mental health at large. Cooking for Happiness by Kornelia Santoro is the result of the research that she did on various food items and recipes that could help everyone out there.

Relatable foodieWhile I forayed into the possible recipes in the expectation of finding unduly purified versions of food habits, I stumbled upon the notes by a foodie. The author has a prologue for each recipe, a backstory, or the reason why she thinks a particular ingredient is superior in terms of health - physical and mental. In short, the book is not a mere cookbook. It is a cookbook, cum memoir cum self-help book. As much as we want to skim through the recipes the author's palpable narration and endearing stories hooked me to the book. The author has left no stone unturned to call out the hollow exaggeration of the pollution in the food. While the fact that the soil and food are not as pure as they used to be, to count them as inadvertently unreliable is indeed a lie propagated with propaganda. The author earnestly requests the readers to try dealing with depression with the right diet provided they are not suicidal. The author explains in detail, the functions of various hormones and the foods that release them. For instance, Dopamine is the happy hormone, Oxytocin is the trust hormone, and so on and so forth.Breaking mythsThe author fearlessly exposes the baselessness of many scientific studies and assumptions which were proved wrong in the year to come. How butter was demonized as the cause of cardiovascular disease and how the present studies disprove the theory. She has dug deep into the folly of various similar assumptions and provided us with many eye-opening revelations. She has brought about recipes from all over the world, France, Greece, Italy, the US, and more. However, I would have loved to see a more comprehensive inclusion of Indian foods. Of course, I am an Indian and stand by my cuisine.
Have you thought that if you soak the vegetables in water, water-soluble vitamins will be lost? Have you thought that if we don't close the lid of the vessel while cooking, the nutrients will escape into the air? There are a lot of small but not-so-small tips and pieces of information in the book. I have never given much thought to the varieties of dishes that we can make from pumpkin, till I read the book. I have never thought that salads can be the tastiest item we can have. Overall the book is entertaining, informative, and useful. I have kept it in my kitchen for trying the recipes.

Overview of Art of War by Sun Tzu - 25 Messages of Self Growth

Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. The leader of armies is the arbiter of people's fate, the man on whom it depends whether the nation shall be in peace or in peril. The skillful soldier does not raise a second levy, and neither is his supply wagons in war loaded more than twice.I war, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns. To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. The skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field. When the army is restless and distrustful trouble is sure to come from the other feudal princes. This is simply bringing anarchy into the army, and flinging victory away.If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of hundreds of battles. The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat and waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. To see victory only when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence. What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins but excels in winning with ease.A victorious army opposed to a routed one is as a pound's weight placed on the scale against a single grain. In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory. The good fighter will be terrible in his onset, and prompt in his decision. Energy developed by good fighting men is as the momentum of a round stone rolled down a mountain thousands of feet in height.Carefully compare the opposing army with your own, so that you may know where strength is superabundant and where it is deficient. He who can modify his tactics in relation to his opponent and thereby succeed in winning, may be called a heaven-born captain. When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate for too hard. When an army is overthrown and its leader is slain, the cause will surely be found among these five dangerous faults. Let them be a subject of meditation.Peace proposals unaccompanied by a sworn covenant indicate a plot.If an general shows confidence in his men but always insists on his orders being obeyed, the gain will be mutual. If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt; if you know heaven and know earth, you may make your victory complete.Walk in depth defined by rule and accomodate yourself to the enemy until you can fight a decisive battle. The enemy's spies who have come to spy on us must be sought out, tempted with bribes, led away and comfortably houses. This they will become converted spies and available for our service. Only the enlightened ruler and the wise general who will use the highest intelligence of the army for proposes of spying and thereby they achieve great results.
Netaji by Krishna Bose - Subhash Chandra Bose's Life, Politics and Struggle
Netaji has always been an enigma for me. What we know about him is half-cooked knowledge that has been propagated by many historians who have derived secondary data about this mysterious hero. However, to read it from someone who is up close to Netaji's life not only through relations but done extensive research is essential for a reader in me. And hence I grabbed Netaji by Krishna Bose.

To have an idea about how the book provides eclectic information about the unsung hero, we should know the author. An English professor with proficiency in the language, Netaji's brother's daughter-in-law; when she decided to write about the majestic person in her family, she is guaranteed to do extensive research.
Krishna Bose (1930-2020) was a Member of Parliament for three terms, elected to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal. From 1999 to 2004, she chaired the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs. In her professional life, she was a professor of English Literature. In December 1955, Krishna (nee Chaudhuri) married Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose (1920-2000), the son of Netaji’s older brother and lifelong confidant Sarat Chandra Bose. Aged twenty, Sisir was Netaji’s chief aide in his daring escape from India in 1941 and drove the escape car from the family’s mansion on Kolkata’s Elgin Road. Krishna helped Sisir build the Netaji Research Bureau at Netaji Bhawan from 1957 onwards. After Sisir’s death, she served as NRB chairperson for twenty years, until her death in 2020.
Netaji for the massesKrishna Bose has been connected with the masses through her Bengali articles. The articles have been divided into 7 parts. The first part is about the women in Netaji's life. His mother Prabhabati Bose, his teacher C.R. Das's wife whom he lovingly calls 'ma', Basanti Debi, Bivavati Bose, his older brother's wife, and Emolies Schenkl his wife. Netaji's relationships with the World leaders have four articles that throw light on his relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Adolf Hitler, and Eamon de Valera.
The next part Azad Hind, Netaji's epic struggle in Europe and Asia is a single article that is a priceless, firsthand witness account of Abid Hasan. This is something that we can never replace. The next part of Netaji's Soldiers is a tribute to the brilliant heroes who have been forgotten in the pages of history. Once we get engaged in the book, we forget the fact that we are reading a real story of a real hero. Because his life is more endearing than any fictional hero.
The author has gone to an end to visiting the places mentioned in the articles and acquired first-hand information from the people related to each instance. The mystery behind the Disappearance of Netaji, who accompanied him - The book is has a plethora of authentic information about Netaji.
