A collection of science & technology news that I found interesting this month. Many of these relate to tech that’s covered in my stories, but some are here purely for inspiration.

Metal wires of carbon complete toolbox for carbon-based computers

Transistors based on carbon rather than silicon could potentially boost computers' speed and cut their power consumption more than a thousandfold-think of a mobile phone that holds its charge for months-but the set of tools needed to build working carbon cir...

August Science Bytes

A collection of science & technology news that I found interesting this month. Since this is the first of these posts, I have some catching up to do, so there are older links as well. Many of these relate to tech that’s covered in “Machinehood,” as well as other stories, but some are here purely for inspiration.

Could Planet 9 be a primordial black hole?

For several years, astronomers and cosmologists have theorized about the existence of an additional planet with a mass 10 times greater than that...

What's In A Name

After seeing my author byline, people have asked what I’d like to be called. Here's a picture to help explain. My family's culture doesn't have the concept of a "family name" so we don't have a first name-last name structure.

CoNZealand - WorldCon 2020 Appearances

In the midst of the pandemic, I am using the word “appearances” loosely as this year’s WorldCon has gone virtual! Here’s where you can see me this week.

Science Fiction & Fantasy Debut Novels in English - 2020

One of the greatest joys as an author is having your first novel get published. However, this is also an incredibly stressful time as your future career can depend on how well that first book does in sales. (Note: Im speaking more of traditionally published novels here, not indie/self-published books.)

Since March 2020, much of the world has shut down due to SARS-COV2 (AKA novel coronavirus). This means new authors have an even bigger challenge in getting the word out about their books,...

Weight of Light: My Short Story Hackathon Experience

IMG_20200227_082127.jpg

Back in February, before the novel coronavirus reshaped the worlds social landscape, I had the privilege of participating in my first short story hackathon. I was invited by ASUs Center for Science and Imagination, in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) in Denver, Colorado. Unlike a software hackathon, the purpose of this was not to win a contest but to create a book of fiction, art, and essays.

First Quarter News: A Novel Deal and an Anthology

The first 3 months of 2020 have certainly been a wild ride, what with a major pandemic being foremost on everyone’s mind. I was supposed to go on the JoCo cruise this year, but I forfeit the trip over COVID-19 concerns. Luckily I had plenty of work to cheer me up, including edits for my debut novel, Machinehood, and my first time editing an anthology, for Escape Pod’s 15th anniversary.

At the end of January, I was able to announce that I’ve signed a deal with Saga Press for the publication of my ...
