Chased by wolves!

This is the rest of the reading at the launch party March 16, 2012. Unbeknownst to me, there was a little technical issue just as I was starting this excerpt, and though it was fixed, we join the reading already in progress.
At this point, Ben and youthful, caustic, shape-changing Raven have been paired up and begun the journey to find the first artifact. As a side issue, Ben has run afoul of Titania, the Queen of Faerie, and he's about to discover just how much trouble he's really in.
To catch up, or even read along, you can find the whole excerpt under the Harper Errant tab above.

And She can Read, too! "The Dragon Ring" (Part 1)
I'm hoping my pal Walter Nelson will be able to get part 2 up soon, but for now, this is me reading at the launch party for The Dragon Ring on March 16. I'm surrounded by friends, so don't mind the familiarity and "in jokes".

Away with the faeries!

For a nice little discussion of the inspiration and how Dragon Ring and the series came to be, Cathie Dunn has given me space on her blog today: Cathie Dunn Writes. Please check it out and comment if you will.
And oh yes, please stop into Amazon or Smashwords and download a copy of The Dragon Ring for yourself. And tell your friends!

So the King of Faerie walks into a bar...

The show is only half a hour, and the first chapter (and a bit) runs about 20 minutes, but Jesse really wanted me to go for it. so there wasn't time for much else. I'll be back in May, though, for a proper chat! Thanks so much to Jesse Coffey of Edin Road for inviting me and making it all so easy!.
And now, and all for your delight, here it is! Your first taste of The Dragon Ring, as read by yours truly.
Air date: 3/13/2012 3:30pm PDT

More excitement than one person was meant to have!
Yes, I know, I said I was going to post more, but life has just been so crazy. Getting a new novel to publication with a small isn't just a matter of sitting back and letting it happen. No no, it's hands on all the way! And with the publisher 8 hours away in Edinburgh, it's been an adventure, I can tell you.
And now we're here! Just days away! The Dragon Ring will be out and in the hands of everyone who has played along and watched me through this--in some case, literally watching me write a novel in public, from inception through the manic days of NaNoWriMo 2009. And they'll read it and fall in love with it and tell their friends, and they'll tell their friends who will buy their own, and so on and so on... Now you can watch me visualizing a best seller. :-)
The Dragon Ring, first in the Harper Errant faery adventure series, hits the electronic book stands on March 16 on Amazon and at Smashwords for every manner of e-reader, tablet, and computer imaginable. A hard-copy may eventually be available, but that's still in the future. Yes, I love paper books too, but here we are. Think how much longer you'd have had to wait for a traditional publisher to make this happen!
And then...then... Yes! I can stop spending all my waking life on this book, and write about something else now and then.
Come join the party on Facebook all day Friday starting as the day begins!

Food for the Elizabethan Soul
And also for the Elizabethan body.
Have you met my other website? The big one? My non-fiction home at Elizabethan.org, is full of wonders much of which is what roots my fiction in the everyday realities of life in the late 16th century. The flagship of that site is A Compendium of Common Knowledge, 1558-1603
Today I'm directing your attention in particular to Of Bread and Wine, the first of many pages about food. William Harrison, writing in 1577, tells us a good deal abut an Englishman's relationship to his food.

Today I'm directing your attention in particular to Of Bread and Wine, the first of many pages about food. William Harrison, writing in 1577, tells us a good deal abut an Englishman's relationship to his food.

The situation of our region, lying near unto the north, doth cause the heat of our stomachs to be of somewhat greater force: therefore our bodies do crave a little more ample nourishment than the inhabitants of the hotter regions are accustomed withal, whose digestive force is not altogether so vehement, because their internal heat is not so strong as ours, which is kept in by the coldness of the air that from time to time (especially in winter) doth environ our bodies.
