A loud bang had me jumping up and grabbing my service weapon before I could take in what was going on. In the doorway, hands on hips like a vengeful superhero, stood Lucille. The door swung back from where it had hit the wall in her mad rush to enter and almost clipped her in the face. She got a hand out in time and gave it another fierce shove, but moved inside before it swung back yet again and clicked shut.

“Easy on my drywall there, killer.” I put my gun back in its holster and sat down. Not because I wanted to sit but more because my legs wouldn’t hold me any longer. To say my knees went weak would be an understatement.

Gone was the covered up, mousy, middle-aged pain-in-the-ass woman from before. This woman, the one with her entire arms showing and bare legs that teased then disappeared behind a short skirt, was Lucille at twenty years of age had her personality taken a sharp turn into sassy and interesting. My eyes nearly bugged out of my head as I took in the curve of her ass and hips, showcased perfectly in the tight fabric of her skirt. And her breasts? Holy hell.

She’d been carrying concealed weapons.

“That’s very judgmental of you.”

“Wha—?” Her hands flew to her hips. Definitely didn’t have a plastic surgeon. She was making all kinds of expressions now. My inner eight-year-old boy clapped his hands and whistled.

“How dare you? I had a man just this morning, barely clothed, wanting to make some cash to get out of town.”

I smiled. “Oh yeah, that must have been Johnny. He’s harmless. Just tried to steal the gold nugget on the Welcome to Auburn Hill sign.”

“He wasn’t wearing a shirt.” She nearly spat the words.

“So?” I pushed off the desk and stood tall, looking down at her. “Last I checked, that isn’t illegal.”

She cocked her head back to gaze up at me, narrowed her eyes, and then climbed up on the chair to tower over me in some twisted game of one-upping.

“That is not the sort of reputation I want at my clinic, Mr. Sutter.”

I bit my lip to keep from laughing. Jesus Christ, the lady was madder than a hornet’s nest and crazier than ol’ Johnny with the suspenders over his belly stealing a plastic nugget. She was literally standing on my chair and looking down her nose at me like I was the crazy one in the room.

I stared at the thick glass box situated at eye level on top of the platform. My brain couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing. It was simple yet it made no sense. A single solitary drop of water hung there, slowly falling and then circling around and starting the slide of gravity once again.

For a moment, I thought of Belle encountering the beast’s magical red rose encased in glass. If I could have brought air into my lungs, I would have laughed out loud at the comparison. I’d been losing my mind all week and now this.

I reached for the water, mesmerized by its dance. My fingertip barely brushed the glass when the water droplet froze in midair. My heart stopped in my chest and the ringing in my ears turned painful. The drop threw itself against the inside of the glass wall, right by my fingertip, splashing into a million tiny droplets before reforming and circling back to attack the glass again.

“It recognizes you.” A deep voice startled me and had me snatching my hand back.
