The Patron Saint of Lost Girls Teaser #rabtbooktours

Literary Fiction / Short Story Collection

Date Published: 09-16-2025

Publisher: Wayne State University Press

In 1970s and '80s Detroit, the city wrestles with an unending economic downturn, increasing violence, and white exodus to the suburbs. Amid all of this is twentysomething Mary who is just trying to grapple with her identity in a world filled with uncertainty.

In this collection of linked stories, we follow Mary as she seeks to cope with and withstand hardship and confront her fears of exploitation, abuse, and death. Along the way, she delves into the complex yet nurturing relationships with her family and friends who teach her to love better, live fuller, and question power. The Patron Saint of Lost Girls presents an unflinching tale of life in the late twentieth-century postindustrial Midwest.

Excerpt

“AUGUST, WHEN the cicadas burned and the lawnmowers sounded like industrial bees, we couldn’t stop. In the bedroom, on the couch, on the floor. Afterward we would lie there, reading the paper or letting the television taunt us like a car salesman. Paul would wiggle his toes against mine, and we’d look at one another for a long time. His face was like a catcher’s mitt, warm and beaten. He reminded me of one of those boys who had moved away when I was little, but Paul had returned a man.”

-“This is Art”

Selected Misdemeanors Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

Essays at the Mercy of the Reader

Creative Nonfiction; Essay Collection; Flash-Essay Collection

Date Published: September 1, 2025

Publisher: University of Nebraska Press

The essays in Selected Misdemeanors are unapologetic word grenades lobbed into an otherwise complacent forgetfulness. Throughout the collection, Sue William Silverman focuses on pivotal, often fleeting moments that defined the course of her life, such as a fraught family vacation; an evening watching the Chippendale dancers’ extravaganza; a Pac-Man-and-bourbon-fueled rumination on failed relationships; and the way melodramatic movies such as Rome Adventure shape an adolescent’s idea of love. Ranging from short to flash to micro length, these emotionally courageous writings imbue minimalist forms with maximalist emotions and an unrepentant, no-holds-barred attitude. Each action explored in this collection produces the Butterfly Effect—seemingly quotidian events rippling into emotional tsunamis.

The Wine Jelly Murder Review #GoddessFish

THE WINE JELLY MURDER

by Meg Benjamin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Roxy Constantine and Nate Robicheaux are into weddings, both for work and family. But when the obnoxious father of the bride is murdered at the engagement party, they find out more about his business than they bargained for.

Now someone wants to stop Roxy from investigating even as she pulls out all the stops on a super New Year’s Eve wedding celebration for her uncle.

She’ll need more than wine jelly favors and wedding cake to stop the killer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
As I stepped onto the landing, I heard something that sounded like a sob. “Did you hear that?”
“What?”
“That sound. It was over…” As I started across the landing toward the stairs, I heard another sob, much louder this time, coming from the stairs leading down to the lower floor. “Is anybody there?” I called.
“Roxy?” It sounded like Thalia, but a very different Thalia from the normal, terrifyingly efficient woman we’d been working with. I stepped quickly to the landing and peered toward the lower floor.
And saw Thalia Rosenberg leaning over Emerson Pollack, who lay spread-eagled on the concrete floor.
From where I stood, he looked very dead.
I ran down the steps. The stairwell was very dark although the light from above streamed down on Pollack’s body where it lay. Nate was at my heels.
Thalia knelt beside Pollack, her face the color of the snow still falling outside. “We need to call an ambulance,” she said. “He’s…hurt.”
Judging by the way Pollack was splayed on the floor, I didn’t think an ambulance would do much good. I put my hand on her shoulder. “Come on, Thalia. Step away from him now.”
Nate had climbed up the stairs and was now speaking urgently into his phone. I heard the words “accident” and “serious injuries,” which might well be true, as far as the “serious injuries” went. I was less certain about the “accident” part.
Thalia looked like she might faint or have hysterics, neither of which I wanted to deal with right then.
She leaned toward me, her brown eyes huge in her pale face. “Oh my God,” she whispered. “My God. He’s dead, isn’t he?”
Ornery Owl's Review
Five out of Five Stars
Following a wedding featuring a contentious clash between the divorced parents of the bride, the father of the bride turns up dead. Is the culprit the mother of the bride, his humiliated date, or someone else entirely?
Roxy Constantine doesn't want to play detective. She wants to concentrate on making the perfect jam for her uncle and her boyfriend's mother's wedding. However, Roxy is in the thick of the mystery, whether she wants to be or not.
Roxy is a relatable character. She just wants to do her job and engage in her hobby. There are a lot of fascinating characters to follow.  If you enjoy cozy food mysteries, be sure to pick up a copy of this story.
Blurb
Desperate to escape the pain of his brother’s death, Jesse Melnik ran—but he couldn’t outrun the grief, no matter how much distance he put between himself and his past. Now, after fifteen years of trying, he’s finally ready to face his hometown of Charlottetown again.
He expects the memories of his brother to hover in every corner of his family’s sailboat and whisper in every sea-tinged breeze.
What he doesn’t expect is Parker Willis, the best friend he left behind without a word the day he fled.
And he certainly doesn’t expect old feelings to resurface.
Parker’s been stuck in a rut since his father died three months ago. Every day is the same: try to keep his father’s dinner cruise business afloat so he can chip away at Dad’s debts, all while working a job that leaves him more frustrated than satisfied.
Then Parker’s routine shatters in the best way possible: Jesse Melnik returns to Prince Edward Island for the summer, all six feet three inches of gorgeous hockey player.
Now, that’s different.
Jesse kickstarts Parker’s heart.
 Parker makes Jesse feel again.
And although both men are a little bit damaged from struggling down the broken path of loss, maybe—just maybe—if they can lean on each other, they’ll learn to move forward at last.
Content warnings: themes of grief, discussions of a parent's death from cancer, discussions/descriptions of a sibling's death from suicide
Excerpt
Jesse glanced over and nearly swallowed his tongue.
How dare running shorts be so goddamn tiny and cling so goddamn nicely to long, shapely legs dusted with hair the same shade as the finest dark chocolate? Jesse was still reeling at being in the same place at the same time as Parker for the first time in years—had, in fact, tossed and turned all night thinking about Parker—and now he showed up out of nowhere again and sent Jesse’s libido into a jumble of desire and yearning?
There were things that Jesse had left in his past, and his attraction to his best friend was supposed to be one of them.
Former best friend? Best friend he’d recently gotten reacquainted with? Former best friend who could be his new best friend?
Fuck. Relationships were hard.
Along with the shorts, Parker also wore a long-sleeved running shirt in teal and a baseball hat with Montreal hockey’s logo on the front. His dark hair curled out from underneath the sides of the hat, and the two-day stubble on his jaw was way sexier than Jesse wanted to admit. He was a couple of inches shorter than Jesse’s six foot three, but whereas Jesse was—admittedly—very big, even for a defenceman, Parker was lanky and toned, the muscle definition obvious in his running gear in a way it hadn’t been in the jeans and Willis Dinner Cruises-branded long-sleeved T-shirt he’d been wearing last night when he’d appeared like a figment of Jesse’s childhood wishes and sat next to him on the bench at the marina.
Whatever he wore, Parker looked like he’d fit into all of Jesse’s empty spaces.
Shaking his head to rid himself of that thought, he shoved his phone back in his pocket and scowled. “I’ll get you a new hat.”
Parker’s lips quirked. “I like this hat.”
“Since when are you a Montreal fan?”
“Hey, don’t knock them. They made it to the playoffs.”
The unlike you was left unsaid, but Jesse heard it loud and clear and refused to be amused.
“So.” Parker’s shoulder bumped up against his. “What are you doing?”
“What are you doing?”
“This is my jogging route.”
“That so?” Jesse would have to remember to be by his window in the mornings so he could watch Parker run by in his short shorts.
“Mm-hmm. Is it your jogging route?”
“No.”
“What are you doing here then?”
Glancing back at the house, Jesse let out a long breath. “Deciding what to tackle first. What colour would you paint that door?”
Parker blinked once and frowned. “Why would you paint it any colour?”
“Because that rusty red makes me think of dead bodies on a crime show?”
“No, I mean . . .” That unique greyish-greenish gaze of Parker’s swung from Jesse to the house and back. “Do you know the people who live here? Are you doing work for them this summer or something?”
I live here,” Jesse said. “And I don’t want to live with that gross colour for the next two months.”
“You . . . bought a house?”
Jesse grunted.
“But you live in Vancouver,” Parker said slowly, as though reminding Jesse of this fact.
“No, I know, but . . .”
But what? He’d wanted a project for the summer? Something that would keep him occupied so he didn’t have to think about where he was and why he was back for the first time in fifteen years? A fixer-upper was as good a distraction as anything.
His therapist wouldn’t love that he was keeping busy instead of sitting with and analyzing his feelings. But she didn’t have to know. Right?
When Jesse didn’t continue, Parker said, “Are you retiring from hockey and moving back here?”
“Fuck no,” Jesse blurted.
Ornery Owl's Rating:Five out of Five Stars
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, and this slow-burn second-chance romance set on beautiful Prince Edward Island delivers.
Professional hockey star Jesse has come a long way in mending his bad behaviors following his brother's death by suicide fifteen years previously, but his soul is still fractured.
Parker is unhappy in his dual roles as captain of his late father's harbor tours and writing grant proposals. He misses his days as a sports journalist.
Parker's world is turned upside down in a good way when Jesse, his childhood best friend and secret crush Jesse returns to Prince Edward Island for the first time in fifteen years.
The way Jesse and Parker slowly but inevitably move from friendship fraught with unspoken desires to a real romantic connection that's built to last is both magical and realistic.
I also appreciated the way the author seamlessly integrated Jesse's brother into the story. Mikey subtly lets Jesse know he's still there, although Jesse can no longer see him. Those who have lost a loved one, whether to suicide or other causes, may take comfort in the idea that our loved ones are always with us, even when they are no longer physically present.
This story isn't just about romance. It's about real and lasting love in all its forms. Jesse and Parker seem like real people rather than stereotypes. I recommend this book for anyone who is hurting and needs to believe healing is possible, and also for anyone who simply likes a good, solid romance story.
Diary of a Cult Girl Book Blitz #rabtbooktours
Cult, Memoir, Diaries
Date Published: June 26, 2025
A Historical Account of Fear, Control, and Escape
“When you’re raised to fear the world, you never question the cage.”
Before she ever knew what freedom felt like, she documented captivity.
Told through the actual journals and letters written while trapped inside one of America’s most quietly dangerous religious cults, Diary of a Cult Girl is a chilling first-person account of life under the rule of Bill Gothard’s teachings—what many now recognize from the “Shiny Happy People” movement.
Raised in rural Alabama, in poverty, with church at home, school at home, and six younger siblings to raise, Crystal Ball’s childhood was shaped not by freedom, but by an addiction to control. Not drugs. Not alcohol. But military-grade submission, inside a cult franchise that gave abusers unchecked authority in God’s name—a system that weaponized fear, shame, and guilt like narcotics to keep women and children quiet and compliant.
In the spirit of The Diary of Anne Frank, this is not just a memoir—it’s evidence. A record of indoctrination. Of blind obedience mistaken for faith. Of a young girl awakening to the unbearable cost of survival.
Alongside her firsthand accounts, Crystal introduces the 3P Framework—Personal Psychological Perceptions—to examine how control systems form in the mind and how they keep victims psychologically trapped, even long after physical escape.
This is the tragic story of a beautiful mind locked in the chains of repression, desperately longing for a better life she was told didn’t exist—until she found the courage to leave it all in the red clay Alabama dust that almost choked her.
About the Author
Crystal Ball went from the bottom 5% of poverty, raised in an extreme religious cult, to the top 5% of earners as a self-made entrepreneur. Her journey spans the gritty aisles of the convenience store industry to high-level real estate deals, with stops in journalism, public speaking, and personal reinvention along the way.
Crystal writes with brutal honesty and piercing insight, drawing from years of painful isolation, spiritual control, and emotional suppression. Her work offers a raw, eye-opening perspective on the lasting damage of authoritarian belief systems—especially in a world where right-wing extremism is on the rise.
Now living her dream life in Panama City Beach, Florida, Crystal is the proud mom of two incredible sons. Her mission is to spark courageous conversations, dismantle shame, and champion the power of self-liberation—one story at a time.
Changing Woman's Hair Teaser #rabtbooktours
Marin Sinclair, Book 2
Suspense Thriller
Date Published: 09/15/2025
Publisher: RabbitHole LLC
When Marin Sinclair discovers teenager Garret Washburn in danger from a deadly conspiracy involving bootlegged alcohol, wolf-witches, an election campaign, murder, and an unknown bomber, she looks to Navajo Nation Police Sergeant Justin Blue Eyes and Federal Agent Cullen MacPherson to help protect Vangie Tso's son from the dark forces at play.
Excerpt
—“It’s likely the same guys,” Franklin whispered. “You need to go for help. Get word to Sergeant Blue Eyes.”
“I can’t go without you,” she said, and Franklin took her hand and pressed it against his side. When she pulled her hand away, it was wet and sticky.
“You’re bleeding!” she said, and Franklin’s nod was dimly visible in the darkness lit only by the fires. “I’ll find something to help,” Marin said, and crawled through the hogan’s entrance, searching by feel until she found several pieces of soft clothing or bedding.
“Hold this over the wound and press,” she said, making a thick pad. She tied the pad around Franklin using a length of bale twine, and he gasped, then sat taking deep breaths.
“Sorry, we need to get the bleeding stopped,” she whispered.
Franklin took another breath and gave a low whistle. A horse broke away from the bunched group and came close to the rails, snorting softly.
“Here is your friend, Otekah,” Franklin said and ducked into the corral. “You must take her and go.”
“Go where?”
Franklin didn’t answer. He took a rope from a corral post and ran the rope behind Otekah’s ears, made a quick turn around the mare’s muzzle, and looped a knot into the side of the make-shift halter. He pushed the end of the rope into Marin’s hands.
“No,” she said. “I can’t leave you. You’re hurt.”
“They’ll soon come looking,” Franklin said. “Trust Otekah to find the way. She’ll be going home.”
“I can’t find my way in the dark!” Marin said.
“She knows the way. There is only one gate to open; our home is near the canyon’s end. You will be able to climb out.”
“No … ” Marin said.
“Climb up to the rim road. Bring back help.”
“Franklin, I can’t climb the canyon wall!”
“There are handholds to guide you,” he said, and he pushed something cold, round, and metallic into her hands … a flashlight.
“I shot one of those Indian kids,” said a man’s deep voice and she and Franklin froze, sinking deeper into the hogan’s shadows. “He ran over here.”
“Lay off. I’m not about to get trampled trying to find him,” a second man answered.
“He’s in here, I know it.”
“He’s not going anywhere. He’s got nowhere to run with this hut built up against the canyon wall.”
“You can either come out or you can bleed to death!” the first man shouted, and there was a sudden blast of gunfire.
Marin yelped, and Otekah reared, yanking the rope from her hands and whirling away. Yuma, his gray coat barely visible, whistled shrilly and kicked against the corral poles until the saplings shuddered.
“I said lay off, you idiot! A pole fence won’t hold half-ton horses! You’ll get us trampled! You don’t even know if the kid’s in there.”
The first man raised his voice. “You hear that, Injun boy? We’re gonna start shooting your horses if you don’t come out!”
“Stow it, Jack! You start shooting and these horses will go crazy. That kid’s not going anywhere. We need to get back to the prisoners.”
“Prisoners,” Marin breathed when the men walked away. “We have to stay and help them.”
“No. You must go, shadi,” Franklin said, making a soft clucking noise until Otekah once more came close, tossing her head as the other horses restlessly circled the corral, stamping and blowing. “My beauty,” Franklin murmured, picking up the trailing rope and looping it around Otekah’s neck.
“This is a bad idea,” Marin said, but she climbed between the corral poles to lean against Otekah’s warmth. The horses were bunched together, pressing hard against the gate poles, anxious to escape, eager to run. Still …
“I’d never forgive myself if you and the others … ”
“You must bring help, tell the Sergeant what has happened.”
There was no one else to go.
When Franklin again pushed the flashlight into her hands, she took it and shoved it into her waistband, then caught Otekah’s mane and rolled onto the mare’s back, catching up the rope in one hand.
Franklin murmured something that sounded like a prayer and slid a pole from the top of the gate. Carefully he lowered one end to the ground, then reached for the next pole and did the same. Even with only two poles down, the horses began to push into the gap, Otekah with them, and Marin clutched the halter rope breathing in the familiar scent of horse—dust, dried grass, musky sweat.
“I’m not sure I can guide her.”
“Just stay on,” Franklin returned.
Marin wrapped the rope tight around her hand and twisted both hands into Otekah’s mane, aware of a familiar rush of excitement, that stomach-clenching tension when Dandy’s muscles had bunched beneath her the second before the rodeo arena gate flew open and they shot forward. She’d done this a hundred times or more, and she bent low to Otekah’s neck, gathering focus.
“Ready … ” Franklin whispered, and he eased the last pole to the ground.
“Franklin, I … ” Marin began, but Franklin stepped back, gave a shrill, yipping yell, and slapped Otekah across the rump, waving his hat as the horses surged forward.—
About the Author
 Mark Robertson is a family man who loves his sport, travelling and exploring the world and has a keen interest in history and creative writing. Mark has a strong imagination and is a great story teller. He has a penchant for imagining characters and their adventures, which he shared as a bedtime treat for his little ones. The Magic Macy series was first imagined at these bedtimes with his children. Magic Macy was one such character and he imagined Macy helping people and creatures who were in difficulty and she would venture around the world making good. The stories come to life with carefully crafted illustrations to inspire the imaginations of children and adults alike. We hope you will enjoy Magic Macy as much as Mark's children do at bedtimes.
