Festival America 2014, Vincennes (outside Paris) September 11-14
I will be attending this year’s Festival America in Vincennes, France. The festival is held every two years and brings together nearly 70 writers from North America, as well as over 30 French writers to participate in various events and roundtable discussions on a wide variety of topics–as well as to meet the public and sign books. For those of you francophiles, here is a link to the Festival America 2014 website: http://www.festival-america.org/

Chelsea Handler shout-out for One Thousand White Women
In the New York Times Book Review, Sun. Mar. 2, in the column “By the Book” the actress/comedian/talk show host Chelsea Handler listed One Thousand White Women as one of her “favorite books of all time,” right next to Anna Karenina (which happens to be one of my favorite books.) Very nice company to be in! Thanks, Chelsea. I have a great role for you in the miniseries!

Chrysis (The Memory of Love) wins 1st Readers’ Prize from French Book of the Month Club
Readers of the GLM (Grand Livre du Mois/Great Book of the Month) Club recently voted Chrysis (English title: The Memory of Love) their favorite book of 2013. For me as a writer, it is always most gratifying when a book wins an award given by consensus of actual readers rather than by a panel of literary critics or journalists. I thank the readers of GLM for this great honor.

The Sporting Road (Mon Amérique) wins the Francis Sommer Prize for fiction, 2013, awarded by the Francis Sommer Foundation and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (Museum of Hunting & Nature), Paris, France
The Museum of Hunting and Nature (Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature ) is one of the most unique and extraordinary museums in Paris. It was founded in 1964 by a wealthy French industrialist, François Sommer (1904-1973) and his wife Jacqueline, both of whom were avid hunters and conservationists. The foundation was set up after his death to continue his work and that of the museum. Sommer was also an accomplished writer, and Ernest Hemingway wrote the preface to his first book, published in 1953. He went on to publish (sometimes in co-authorship with his wife, Jacqueline) nearly a dozen more books on the subjects of hunting, nature, animals, and conservation. I am particularly proud to have The Sporting Road selected for this award, because like all the best hunters, François Sommer understood the inexorable links between human beings, wild animals, and the natural world that supports us all. And he devoted his life to nurturing, protecting and defending these connections.

Denver Book Events Cancelled
Unfortunately, due to severe winter storm weather, I was forced to cancel my trip to Denver. But I hope to reschedule with both The Tattered Cover and Bookbar after the new year, possibly in February. Please stayed tuned for definite dates. In the meantime, copies of my new novel, THE MEMORY OF LOVE, are available for sale in both these bookstores, as well as at The Bookies in Denver.

Book Signing: Tattered Cover, Denver, Wed., Dec. 4, 2013
I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be at the Tattered Cover (2526 E. Colfax Ave.) on Wed. evening, Dec. 4, 2013, beginning at 7:30 P.M. to read from and sign my new novel, THE MEMORY OF LOVE . As I haven’t published a book in the U.S. since THE WILD GIRL in 2005, this will be my first return since then to what I still consider to be my “hometown” bookstore. I look forward to seeing all my old friends in Colorado, and I hope you’ll all come out for this event.

Penca Book Launch Party
The Penca restaurant book launch on Nov. 20 was a grand success, largely thanks to my friend, owner Patricia Schwabe, who provided the space, wine and hors d’oeuvres. I thank, too, my friend, art curator Joanne Stuhr, who hung for this event the 1920-era paintings of the heroine of my novel, Chrysis Jungbluth, and who also sent out invitations to her vast database of friends, colleagues, and clients. Thanks as well to my pal Michael Bernstein, owner of Colonial Frontiers antique store, who helped hang paintings and sent invitations to their own client list. Finally thanks are due to all of the guests who so generously supported my work by attending the party and purchasing novels. Thank you!
